The papal conclave began May 7 at the Sistine Chapel in Rome where 133 cardinals from around the world have gathered for the election of the new pope following last month’s death of Pope Francis.
It is one of the most geographically diverse conclaves in history with 53 cardinals from Europe, 23 from Asia, 37 from the Americas, 18 from Africa and 4 from Oceania with a total of 133 cardinals coming from 71 different nations — including 10 from the United States.
Who are the American cardinals in the running to be next pope?
There are seven other U.S. cardinals who are older than 80 and therefore not eligible to participate as conclave electors: Edwin O’Brien, Roger Mahony, Adam Maida, Seán Patrick O’Malley, Justin Rigali, James Francis Stafford and Donald Wuerl.
