Walmart’s highest-paying gig isn’t found at the checkout line, pharmacy, or auto center. Instead, the retail giant says that cake decorators earn the big bucks.
Walmart confirmed to USA TODAY that, outside of manager roles, cake decorators are the highest-paid hourly positions at U.S. Walmart stores, earning $19.25 an hour on average. Walmart employs about 1.6 million people in the U.S. and more than 2 million worldwide. Over 6,000 employees are cake decorators.

Walmart cake decorators’ pay starts at $17 per hour, highest wage for non-managers
In Ohio, cake decorators typically make between $17 and $25 per hour. According to the job description, the tasks of a cake decorator go beyond cakes and cupcakes. The job also involves ordering products and utilizing edible cake imaging.
Walmart says it decorates over 150,000 cakes each week across all its stores, adding that the chain sees a peak in orders during graduation season.
What’s required to be a Walmart cake decorator?
To apply to be a cake decorator at your local Walmart, applicants must be at least 18 years old and have six months of experience in fresh production.
The chain said that it prefers applicants with prior experience decorating cakes, though that is not a requirement.
How many Walmart stores are in Ohio?
Walmart operates 138 supercenters in Ohio, including seven in Cincinnati, five in Columbus, three in Dayton, two each in Canton, Dublin and Hamilton, and one in Akron.
