Truck sideswipes Amish horse-drawn buggy near Brewster

SUGAR CREEK TWP. − An Amish woman in a horse-drawn buggy was hurt when a pickup trying to pass on U.S. Route 62 sideswiped her buggy, totaling the buggy, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The crash took place shortly before 4:08 p.m. Aug. 13 in the 13000 block of Navarre Road SW south of Brewster near the bridge over Sugar Creek, an OSHP dispatcher said.

Trooper A. Burch said the Amish woman, who lives in the Navarre area, was riding her buggy south on Navarre Road SW.

A man in a pickup from the Wilmot area also going south crossed the double center line to pass as they approached a small hill. With the driver apparently concerned about possible oncoming traffic, the truck shifted back and sideswiped the buggy, sending it off right side of the road.

The horse, which was not hurt, fled and made its way back on its own to owner’s farm a short distance away.

The woman was transported to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital, Burch said. The man driving the pickup truck, who was not injured, was cited for improper passing.

The two-lane Navarre Road SW was closed for about 45 minutes for the crash investigation and cleanup, the Patrol said.
