CANTON − A pickup went off Interstate 77 and into a creek the evening of Aug. 3, leading to a trapped person being rescued by first responders.
The man was in critical condition at Aultman Hospital, the Canton Fire Department said.
Canton Dispatch learned at 6:31 p.m. that the truck had driven off the highway into the West Branch of the Nimishillen Creek. Pictures from the department indicate the crash occurred on I-77 N near the Route 800 exit.
A statement from the Canton Fire Department said a Bolivar Fire Department crew saw the vehicle submerged upside down in the creek with one occupant trapped inside. They stopped to assist.
Canton firefighters arrived and the first responders freed the trapped man from the vehicle. He was unconscious and not breathing. The first responders administered resuscitation measures before paramedics rushed him to Aultman.
The Stark County Hazardous Materials Response Team was taking steps to prevent fluids from leaking from the vehicle and contaminating the creek, the Canton Fire Department said.
It’s not yet clear why the pickup went off the highway.
