CANTON — The greatest statistical kicker in the history of the National Football League turned out to be among the most entertaining players on the Hall of Fame stage in recent memory on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.
Adam Vinatieri made the most of his time during his Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement speech.
Nobody expected the bevy of jokes Vinatieri unleashed during his speech. Nobody was safe. Not even the man he proclaimed the “greatest coach of all time.” Vinatieri drew laughs by making a joke about the absence of New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.
“It could be that he was on a big recruiting trip for North Carolina,” Vinatieri said. “That or he was judging his girlfriend’s cheerleading competition.”
Tom Brady was next up on the list. After joking that Drew Bledsoe was the greatest Patriots quarterback of all time, he cautioned about making more jokes about Brady.
“I was afraid if I kept going he would come up here and give me a ‘Will Smith’ like he gave to Logan Paul recently,” Vinatieri said.
The Indianapolis Colts were not spared either. Vinatieri delivered a zinger to fellow Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.
“I want to thank Peyton for donating his forehead to use as the teleprompter today,” Vinatier said. “A big forehead needs a big brain to go with it, and his football IQ was off the charts.”
Perhaps his boldest joke was saved for Pat McAfee, his former holder and a national sports personality.
“I want to thank Pat for being here,” Vinatieri said. “He was the person who enjoyed holding my balls the most, other than my wife.”
Jokes and the humor aside, a sense of humility and gratitude also was evident throughout his speech.
“Here I stand at the top of the mountain,” Vinatieri said. “Here at the pinnacle of greatness, I can officially say my greatest dreams have come true.”
Vinatieri spent a good portion of his time talking about the sacrifices his wife and children made during his career.
“I was known by a lot of names as a player,” Vinatieri said. “‘Mr. Clutch,’ ‘Automatic Adam,’ and even ‘The G.O.A.T.’ The greatest name I have been known as is ‘dad.’ Football is temporary. Family is forever.”
That doesn’t mean the game doesn’t hold a very special place in Vinatieri’s heart. He devoted the last moments of his speech to lavish praise on the game and finished it with a heartwarming final message to the sport.
“I hope I honored you as much as you honored me,” Vinatieri said.

Vinatieri paid tribute to the Patriots, including his legendary coach Bill Belichick and famed quarterback Tom Brady.
Of Belichick, who was controversially snubbed in this year’s Hall of Fame vote, Vinatieri said “Thank you for demanding excellence every single day.”
He then turned to humor about his former coach, who’s endured a tough last year coaching college football at North Carolina.
“Unfortunately, Bill Belichick can’t be here today. There’s a lot going on at UNC today. … He’s judging his girlfriend’s cheerleading contest.”
Vinatieri, though, made sure to then say, “In my opinion, Bill is the greatest coach of all time.”

He will be presented by Carlie Irsay-Gordon, who is the owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts.

Vinatieri won four Super Bowl titles during an NFL career that spanned three decades and holds NFL records for career points (2,673), consecutive field goals made (44), career field goals (599) and most seasons with 100-plus points (21).
Vinatieri set nearly every kicking and scoring record with New England on the way to helping the Patriots win three Super Bowls. Among his franchise records are most career points (1,158), consecutive games with a field goal (25) and longest field goal (57).
More team records fell in Indianapolis, as he retired as the Colts career leader in points (1,515) and holds the record for most field goals from 50-plus yards (37). Vinatieri won a fourth Super Bowl, too, with the Colts.

Vinatieri is a member of the NFL 100 All-Time Team, joining Hall of Fame classmate Larry Fitzgerald and former teammate Tom Brady as the only active players at the time of its release. Vinatieri was named to the NFL All-Decade Team of the 2000s. He was first-team All-Pro three times and selected to the Pro Bowl three times.
