The letter warning about democratic socialism’s dangers (“Democratic socialism is more scary than Russia or China”) raises concerns worth discussing but overlooks a larger problem facing our country: Political extremism is not limited to one side of the ideological spectrum.
Far-left rhetoric can be troubling, particularly when it involves unrealistic proposals or dismisses institutions that many Americans believe play an essential role in maintaining a safe, stable society. However, it is equally important to acknowledge the stream of far-right rhetoric that Fox News, Newsmax, and other self-described news networks broadcast nightly. Fear, outrage, and division have become profitable commodities, and Americans are paying the price.
I wonder whether the author was equally outraged and horrified when supporters of the current administration attempted to overturn a lawful presidential election on Jan. 6, 2021. If we are concerned about threats to our Republic, an attack on the peaceful transfer of power deserves at least as much attention as the comments of a political activist on a television interview.
The greatest danger to our Constitution is not coming from the far left, nor from foreign governments alone. Increasingly, it comes from within — from elected officials, political leaders, media personalities, and activists who place partisan loyalty above democratic principles and the rule of law. When leaders encourage Americans to distrust elections, disregard court decisions, or vilify fellow citizens as enemies, they weaken the foundation of our Republic.
Our nation has endured for more than 250 years because of its institutions, its checks and balances, and its commitment to constitutional government. Those principles should be defended consistently, regardless of which political party is responsible for undermining them.
If we are truly concerned about protecting Lady Liberty, we should be willing to condemn dangerous rhetoric, attacks on democratic norms, and abuses of power wherever they originate.
