CAMBRIDGE − Host Cambridge High enjoyed a convincing openning-night victory over Zanesville with a 74-46 final score in boys hardwood action inside a packed Gene Ford Gymnasium on Wednesday, Nov. 26.
The Bobcats fed off the large crowd and jumped out to a quick 16-5 lead over the Blue Devils in the early stages of the first quarter behind senior sharpshooter Garrett Carpenter quick 12 point outburst, which included a a pair of long range triples. Fellow senior running mate Mason Gregg got in on the fun with three 3-pointers in the frame.
Cambridge finished the opening frame with a 26-11 lead, in the second stanza the visiting Blue Devils closed the margin a bit with an 18-12 scoring edge to reduce the Bobcats lead to 38-29 at the halftime break.
The Bobcats regained firm control of the contest out of the locker room to open the third quarter with a decisive 23-7 scoring advantage. Junior Cam Lauer and senior Austin Jenkins each tallied eight points and two three-point goals in the period.
Carpenter finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Cambridge (1-0), with Lauer adding 16 points, Gregg finished with 15 points, and Jenkins closed with 13.

Crooksville 47, Buckeye Trail 45: The Warriors absorbed a tough road setback as they misfired on a potential game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in non-league action on Wednesday, November 26th.
Jersey Eddy continued her red-hot scoring for Buckeye Trail (0-2) with a team leading 21 points, following a 22 point effort in a season opening loss to Caldwell. Anna McVicker finished with 13 points with Josey Rome connecting on a trio of 3-pointers for 9 points
Tuesday, November 25 scores
Cambridge 51, Meadowbrook 46 (2 OT): The visiting Bobcats outlasted Guernsey County rival Colts for a hard fought double-overtime girls basketball battle at Meadowbrook High School on Tuesday, November 25.
CHS sophomore Cami Moore drilled a clutch 3-pointer at the buzzer to deadlock the game at 38-38 to send the contest into an extra session.
With the Bobcats trailing 38-35 with approximately 10 seconds remaining, the Bobcats came up the floor and got the ball into the hands of Moore. She calmly centered herself and drained a three-pointer with less than a second showing on the clock to send the game into its first overtime.
The Bobcats and the Colts were locked up at 41 points heading into the second extra period when the Bobcats used a combination of floor baskets and free throws to outscore Meadowbrook 10-5 and take the victory.
Senior Miranda Cole opened the second overtime with a three-point field goal, while senior Alaina Sigman scored on a drive to the basket. The Colts kept battling, but were unable to catch up as the Cats’ Rhia Moorehead sank four of four free throws in the final stanza to ice the win.
Overall, the Bobcats made just 15 of 29 foul shots in the game, but connected on five ― Kadence Hanes making one of two ― in the second overtime.
In a game where neither team led by more than six points, the Colts and Cats finished the first quarter tied at nine. Cambridge led by a single point at the half, 20-19, and the teams were tied after three quarters at 27.
In the game, Moore scored 16 points finishing with four triples, Aliana Sigman scored 14 with a trio of 3-pointers with and Hanes added double figure help with 10.
The Bobcats improve to 2-0 for the season winning under first-year head coach Mike Birkhimer.
“I was really pleased with how the girls responded tonight,” Birkhimer said. “I told the girls it’s been a long time since a Cambridge girls basketball team started out 2-0. So, this is a huge boost for us and something we can build upon moving forward.”
Meadowbrook was playing their season opener under their first-year head coach Dave Francis, finished with a pair of double figure scorers with Avery Kerns leading the way with 15 points and Presleigh Valentine adding 11. Haidyn Beros finished with six points and Aubri Norman with five for the Colts.
New Philadelphia 41, John Glenn 24: Khloe Sours pumped in a game high 19 points to lead the Quakers past the Muskies in their season opener inside the ‘Fish Tank’ on Tuesday evening.
Sophomores Brynli Cavezza and Maddie Wiley each tallied 8 points to lead the John Glenn (0-1) offense, with senior Faith Hayes chipped in with five points.

Caldwell 59, Buckeye Trail 53: The host Redskins held off the Warriors with Breighlee Moracco’s 20-point effort in season opening girls basketball action on Monday, November 24th.
Mea Hendershot added 15 for Caldwell (1-0), with Laynie Sidwell and Lyla Lowe each chipping in with nine points.
Jersey Eddy pumped in a game-high 22 points to lead Buckeye Trail (0-1), with Anna McVicker adding 13 markers and Josey Rome with 12.
