Emergency management agencies in Hamilton County and Dearborn County have ordered evacuations of areas along the Whitewater River.
The Dearborn County Emergency Management Agency has ordered mandatory evacuation for communities along Whitewater River due to “unprecedented flooding.”
The agency made the announcement on social media just after 8 p.m. Aug. 13. It said communities impacted included Longnecker, Pinhook, Cranes Run, Barber, Bonnie Lane, Herberts Lane, Cobblestone Court, Stonefields Lane and Loia Creek Lane or “anyone along the whitewater river in Dearborn County,” which is just west of Hamilton County.
“Please evacuate now,” the agency said.
Shelter for those evacuating is located at 505 Bielby Road in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
A mandatory evacuation order was also issued for those in Harrison along the Whitewater River due to the flooding threat, according to Hannah Storrs from Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency.
The agency said in a social media post that residents along Lawrenceburg Road down to Suspension Bridge Road need to evacuate immediately.
“Flood waters can move swiftly and rise rapidly,” the post said. “Use caution driving. Take pets and do not waste time packing personal belongings.”
Information for Hamilton County residents is currently on the agency’s social media. More information and updates will be posted on the agency’s website, Storrs said.
A notice posted just before 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 13 stated evacuations were ordered for:
Residents of the following areas were told to be ready to evacuate: Flintstone Drive between Featherwood Drive and Whitewater Drive.
Areas along the Whitewater River are under a flood warning until 2:11 p.m. Aug. 14, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Several structures are flooded from Mound Haven to Cedar Grove to New Trenton, the warning said.
The weather service also said in an X post that “historic rises” on the Whitewater River at Brookville are expected to cause flooding issues downstream in West Harrison, Indiana, and Harrison, Ohio.
The river at Brookville crested at 25 feet at 7 p.m. Aug. 13, which is considered within “moderate” flood stage.
According to the weather service’s forecast for the area of Harrison, showers are likely after 10 p.m. Thursday, and possibly a thunderstorm. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half of an inch are possible.
Showers and thunderstorms may then return Friday in the early afternoon.
