'Crust Crusher' bringing 3-on-3 basketball to streets of Hebron

HEBRON ― In the spirit of similar Gus Macker tournaments, the Lakewood Youth Basketball is bringing 3-on-3 ball to the streets of Hebron.

As the annual Pie Festival is being held Sept. 11-12, the first Crust Crusher tournament will be held on High Street in Hebron and at Evans Park, surrounded by live music and food trucks. Awards will be given, with divisions ranging from third and fourth graders to an adult co-ed division.

“It will be boys and girls divisions for third and fourth grade, fifth and sixth, seventh and eighth and high school,” said Brandi Tracey, treasurer for Lakewood Youth Basketball. “Fifth and sixth graders have been our biggest group to sign up right now, and we’ve had a few adults.”

The Lakewood Youth Basketball Association was formed in January and immediately conducted a Spring Showdown 3-on-3 event with a lot of success. Teams from around the county, and even neighboring Pickerington and Lancaster, competed.

“We want this to be countywide and beyond,” Tracey said. “We’ve been looking for more fundraisers and thought this would really be cool to bring to the streets of Hebron. We thought this would be something that people would really go for.”

Play begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 11 for all divisions but high school, and continues at 1 p.m. Sept. 12. In the event of bad weather, play would shift to 6 p.m. Sept. 12 and 1 p.m. Sept. 13.

Court sponsors include Stephanie Snedden, Howard Hanna Real Estate; Field to Fork Cattle Co LLC, Phoenix Rise Athletics Group and S&F Photography.

Lakewood Youth Basketball conducted a successful K-6 youth basketball camp this summer, led by Lancers’ varsity basketball coaches Zach Parr (boys) and Ian Green (girls).

“We had a great meeting with the coaches, and they want us to help them get the kids into the game at an early age,” Tracey said. “Really work with them and build up their love of the game. This can only help our programs on down the road.”
