3 men from Netherlands dead in crash on Ohio 13 in Knox County

Three occupants of a Ford Transit van, all from the Netherlands, died in a collision with a tractor-trailer on Ohio 13 on Aug. 18.

At 12:33 p.m. on Ohio 13 at Yankee Street in Berlin Township, Knox County, a Ford T350 Transit van, operated by Gijs M. Odpam, 48, of the Netherlands, was traveling westbound on Yankee Street, according to a news release from the Mount Gilead post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Odpam failed to yield at a stop sign and his vehicle was struck by a Kenworth T680, operated by James S. Cline, 51, of Mount Vernon, traveling north on Ohio 13.

There were seven occupants in the Ford Transit van. Three occupants succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene, according to the patrol.

They were identified as Arno Kramer, 55, Martijn E. Van Vooren, 44, and Hermanus J. Fortuin, 55, all of the Netherlands.

Odpam and the three other passengers in the Ford Transit van were transported to local hospitals for their injuries.

The Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Fredericktown Fire/EMS, Mount Vernon Fire Department, Knox County Coroner’s Office, Mike’s RV and Diesel Repair, K&S Towing, the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Mount Vernon Police Chaplain’s Association.

The crash remains under investigation.
