New York State Police are investigating a fire in the town of Russia that killed one person, according to a statement.
At 7:45 a.m.., on June 30, 2025, state police and the Poland Fire Department were dispatched to a residence on Rose Valley Road, in the town of Russia, in Herkimer County, for a house fire.
Once there, firefighters found a two-story residence fully engulfed in fire. Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and during overhaul, remains of a human body were found, troopers said.
State Police Investigators are working with Investigators from New York state fire to determine the origin and cause.
The identity of the victim is being held pending forensic confirmation and notification of next of kin.
