We’re a week into the season and have a full schedule across the region.

The scoreboard will have a slightly different look this season. I will be highlighting some of the games to watch each week and will drop a couple of names each day, an honor roll of sorts, highlighting the standouts. The schedules will be here along with all of the Section 1, CHSAA and private school results.

Yorktown locks down a win at John Jay

CROSS RIVER – Blame the weather.

The lively atmosphere that normally highlights this longstanding rivalry was dulled by the chilly rain and the calendar impacted the level of execution, but Yorktown and John Jay-Cross River still got after each other.

It’s what they do.

The Huskers got what they came for Saturday, posting a 6-2 win. Highlights were few and far between with both sides early in the process of building chemistry. Yorktown had more chances, though, compliments of a defense that went looking for contact.

“It’s a new defense, but it’s the same concept every season,” junior goalie Hunter Mezzatesta said. “We know this defense. We really come together, and it shows each time we lock down our side of the field.”

Takeaways

It’s going to be a minute before the Huskers look comfortable on the offensive end. They had three possessions dead-ended by the shot clock Saturday but that’s easily solved with more experience. Yorktown had to deal with two preseason injuries but got everyone back this week. And the fact that there was more wheeling than dealing Saturday is a promising sign because this offense has not had legitimate footspeed in recent seasons.

With so many new faces in the lineup, it could be a couple of weeks before the Wolves are up to speed. The instincts are lacking right now and that situation is only going to improve with game minutes.

Give the goalies credit, too, for limiting the number of highlights. Mezzatesta is a five-star recruit who is committed to play at the next level for Virginia. Blake O’Callaghan is a fellow 2027 standout who is heading to Princeton.

Game ball

Ryan Fastiggi unleashed three shots and found the back of the net twice.

John Jay-Cross River (1-2): Dino Rajmani 1G; Brendan Corelli 1G; O’Callaghan 14S.

They said it

“It’s still a big rivalry,” Mezzatesta said. “We go 110% each game, but this game we bring a little extra.”

“We’ve been playing together since we were young so we definitely have some chemistry already,” Fastiggi said. “We came into the season a little underrated, so we’re trying to show everyone what we’re about.”

Thursday

Somers makes quick work of Scarsdale

LINCOLNDALE – Yep, these guys are really good at lacrosse.

Somers had a comfortable lead five minutes into the season-opener, but never once acknowledged the scoreboard. It’s full steam ahead. The Tuskers understand they have ground to cover if they want to realize a Section 1 title.

It’s been a while.

Somers grabbed some early momentum Thursday, posting a dominating 17-4 win over Scarsdale.

“We know we have the talent,” Tuskers attackman Miguel Iglesias said. “The hard part is putting it all together and playing the way we know we have to play. We have to come out like this every single day. That’s not easy. I’m hoping we compete like this all season.”

Takeaways

Somers has been waiting for this group to come of age. The goal is to win the program’s first Section 1 title since 2009, but the Tuskers are in Class C now, so dethroning Rye is the only way to grab that hardware. It’s too early to play up the rivalry but knowing there is not even a second to waste is going to help Somers remain as relentless as it was here.

There was a lot of teaching on the Raiders sideline. It’s going to be that kind of a year, but don’t write this group off. Scarsdale is a third-week-of-May team. The Raiders have a history of peaking for the playoffs.

Do not overlook the Tuskers defense. These guys are big and mobile. Logan Ruby, Bret Kennedy, Tristan Wachtel and Brendan Lyle are quick to engage with poles. Dean Palazzolo and Holden Brelesky are defensive middies with enough footspeed to short circuit teams looking to gain a numbers advantage.

Game ball

Somers midfielder Matt Mayfield went 24 for 24 on face offs and handed out a pair of assists.

 Scorebook

Scarsdale (1-1): Turner Mauro 2G, 1A; Charlie Starr 1G; Anders Burrows 1G, 1A; Tommy Iasiello 2A.

Somers (1-0): Tristain Iglesias 6G, 3A; Miguel Iglesias 4G, 3A; Ryan Brush 2G; Dylan Jimenez 2G; Mason Kelly 1G; Bret Kennedy 1G; Russell Girolomo 1G; Andrew Marzella 3S; Hudson Ruby 6S.

They said it

“Knowing we might have to beat Rye at the end, it means taking no days off,” Miguel Iglesias said. “I think that is going to help us on our way.”

“This offense is really good,” Mayfield said. “We have so many guys who can put the ball in the back of the net. We have guys on the bench, too, who can score and that’s really hard for opposing teams to stop. … The shot clock is giving us more possessions, giving me more faceoffs. I think it’s definitely helping our team out.”

Monday

Greeley starts fast, rolls over Mamaroneck

CHAPPAQUA – The importance of staying humble is a topic of conversation just two games into the new season.

And for good reason.

Greeley has already made a lot of noise. The Quakers opened Saturday with a one-goal win over Cold Spring Harbor and followed up Monday with a resounding 16-11 victory over Mamaroneck.

Consecutive wins over state powers will inspire headlines.

“We have to stay humble and keep working,” junior FOGO Luke Tavolacci said. “We have to come into practice the same way each day.”

Takeaways

Matt Byrne and Luke Dessi already have a lethal senior-to-freshman connection. They put Greeley up 4-1 with 2:50 to go in the first quarter. The Tigers were flat early and failed to match the level of intensity.

Mamaroneck opened last week with a loss to Half Hollow Hills. It’s early, but the 0-2 start has to be disappointing given the lofty expectations.

It was just one day, but Tavolacci was impressive. He was a role player a year ago. Tavolacci has solid wingmen, too, in Zack Klein and Spencer Kalish. They were relentless, winning 24 faceoffs.

Game ball

Dessi played like a veteran off the ball and delivered seven goals.

Scorebook

Mamaroneck (0-2): Brian Auker 4G, 1A; Jude Meissner 2G, 1A; Nate Kulish 2G.

Greeley (2-0):  Dessi 7G, 1A; Byrne 3G, 8A; Jameson Blakeslee 3G; Zac Klein 2G; Jake Gashi 1G, 2A; Luke Kaplow 11S.

They said it

“We had some big wins against teams like Mamaroneck and Bronxville and Somers last season, but we also lost a game to Fox Lane, 3-2, or whatever it was,” Byrne said. “We have to kind of look back at the losses and let them ground us a little bit.”

“We didn’t really come out with a lot of energy,” Mamaroneck coach Jeff Barnard said. “That’s where our disappointment lies. We have to reel them in knowing every game is against a strong opponent. I think we just came into the season a little bit overconfident.”
