SLEEPY HOLLOW – Vincenzo Mannello won a Westchester County wrestling championship, even if it was a little strange to see him without his brother Marcarlo nearby and his dad Mick in the corner taking video on his phone.
The Westlake High School freshman Mannello won the 118-pound title, picking up a 19-3 technical fall over Iona Prep sophomore Dorian Hidalgo on Jan. 24 at Sleepy Hollow High School.

“I’ve got to just keep doing what I’ve been doing,” Mannello said of the two weeks between now and the Section 1 championships at the Westchester County Center where he hopes to win his third Section 1 title. “Get better where I can improve and just show what I can really do in sections and states.”
Marcarlo Mannello, Vincenzo’s younger brother, is competing at the Under-14 Kids Nationals in Indianapolis, and their father Mick traveled with him. So, we had the rare instance of the two Mannello brothers competing for titles in entirely different tournaments.
“Definitely a little different experience because he’s always there for me and I appreciate that,” said Vincenzo Mannello, who was named most outstanding wrestler among the lightweights. “Just still making them proud from out here when he’s all the way out in Indiana.”
Both Mannello brothers wrestle for the combined Briarcliff/Byram Hills/Valhalla/Westlake team.
With the 103-pound field a little more wide open with Marcarlo Mannello not present, Horace Greeley sophomore Andrew Kalathil took advantage and won the county title with a 11-0 major decision over Yorktown eighth grader Jace McCormack. Yorktown’s Nick Hobson, who also regularly gets his hand raised at 103, was competing at the Gene Brigham Memorial Tournament at Minisink Valley.
Kalathil was one of three Horace Greeley wrestlers to win championship belts Saturday, joining Nick Debellis at 150, who defeated Ossining’s Jonathan Abzun in a 9-1 major decison, and Chris Nocca at 157, who won by technical fall, 17-1, over Lakeland/Panas’ Matthew Clyman.
Fotis Koufalis headlines Iona Prep’s big day
Iona Prep sophomore Fotis Koufalis probably had one of the more impressive tournaments in winning the 126-pound title.
He defeated three-time Section 1 champion Nick Fortugno of BBHVW in a semifinal by a 7-5 decision and then picked up a 13-7 decision over Sleepy Hollow’s Kelvin Jimenez for the title.
“I wrestled in the Shoreline tournament (on Jan. 17 in New Rochelle) and I didn’t even place,” said Koufalis, who’s from New Rochelle. He avenged a loss to Jimenez in the Shoreline consolations in Saturday’s final. “It’s just crazy because I was the fourth seed and I wasn’t even supposed to be here. The coaches – we were actually talking about not letting me go because I had a slight knee injury, but I pursued trusting God’s path, went for it and eventually got mine.”
Iona Prep won the team championship with 209 points. Other Gaels to bring home Westchester County belts were Shane Degl, at 138, who won by decision over White Plains’ Jamaal Wells, 8-4; George Johnson, at 165, who won a 20-11 major decision over Fox Lane’s Luke Ryan, and Lorenzo Gunzer, at 190, who won a 5-4 decision over Somers’ T.J. Mauro.
Gunzer’s title was his second straight, but first since transferring from Harrison to Iona Prep. He also won the 190-pound title in 2025.
“I love Harrison. The coaches were really great to me and so were my teammates. I love them to death,” Gunzer said. “But transferring over meant a lot to me. I have a lot of friends at Iona and they helped me a lot with that decision. Being on the wrestling team now, the kids have really welcomed me and I have a family here now. The coaches have done a really good job.”
For Johnson, who won the Eastern States title at 157 two weeks ago, it was his first action since then, and against an opponent who placed at Eastern States in Ryan. He was voted most outstanding heavyweight wrestler of the tournament.
“I took some time off, definitely didn’t wrestle my best,” said Johnson, who’s from Mahopac. “I compete at my best when I’m at my worst. I know what I need to fix, and I’ll be back.”
Huge win for Matteo Crino, New Rochelle
New Rochelle junior Matteo Crino, at 132, is another wrestler who failed to place at Shoreline and picked up a belt at the Westchester County tourmament.
But for Crino, Shoreline in his home tournament, so it meant a good deal to him to pick up a tournament win in the county tournament.
“There was a little motivation for me, I used it and came back,” said Crino, who defeated Lakeland/Panas’ Daniel Horowitz by major decision in the final, 12-2.
“It felt like all the stuff I’ve been doing has been paying off and I’m just ready for sections,” said Crino, has competed in the county tournament four times in his career.
“My mind was right and I was in the right headspace in the whole tournament,” Crino said.
“I thought Matteo had an amazing day, from start to finish,” New Rochelle coach Eddie Ortiz said. “Undoubtedly, his best performance of the season. When he is offensive and trying to score points from all positions, he is tough to beat. This is a nice springboard for him as we head toward the postseason.”
The finals, match by match
103 final: No. 1 Andrew Kalathil (Horace Greeley) maj. dec. No. 2 Jace McCormack (Yorktown), 11-0. The lowdown: With Marcarlo Mannello and Nick Hobson at other events, the field was wide open and Kalathil cashed in. This was his second tournament at 103, having also wrestled there at Eastern States.
110 final: No. 1 Ethan Steuber (Somers) pinned No. 3 Flavio Di Nicola (Fox Lane), 2:35. The lowdown: The senior Steuber won a county title for the second straight year, after winning at 108 in 2025. “My freshman and sophomore years, I lost in the finals, so it was a big win last year. And you know they say, once it could be a fluke, but twice, you know…”
118 final: No. 1 Vincenzo Mannello (BBHVW) tech. fall No. 2 Dorian Hidalgo (Iona Prep), 19-3. The lowdown: Mannello did not compete in this tournament last year and had faced Hidalgo before. “He’s definitely a great wrestler and it’s always a great match,” Mannello said. “It’s always a great experience wrestling him.”
126 final: No. 4 Fotis Koufalis (Iona Prep) dec. No. 3 Kelvin Jimenez (Sleepy Hollow), 13-7. The lowdown: Koufalis had the biggest upset of the tournament in the semifinals over Nick Fortugno and avoided a letdown against a very game Jimenez, who’s beaten him before. “I didn’t have an easy path, but I got the job done at the end,” Koufalis said.
132 final: No. 2 Matteo Crino (New Rochelle) maj dec. No. 5 Daniel Horowitz (Lakeland/Panas), 12-2. The lowdown: Crino is a regular contender at 132 and made a nice statement for himself with a tournament victory.
138 final: No. 1 Shane Degl (Iona Prep) dec. No. 2 Jamaal Wells (White Plains), 8-4. The lowdown: Degl is establishing himself as the man to beat 138, with Shoreline and Westchester titles to his credit in the last two weeks. Keep an eye on Wells in Section 1 Division I. He’s a competitor and may be flying under some people’s radar in a stacked weight class.
144 final: No. 4 Cal Ehrmann (Somers) dec. No. 3 Colin Liebertz, 8-6. The lowdown: Ehrmann defeated teammate Ryan Ball in a 12-5 semifinal decision, as Ball had moved up for this tournament. Ball was then excitedly in his teammate’s corner during a tough bout against a game Liebertz. Big win for Ehrmann after not winning a Somers title earlier in the week.
150 final: No. 1 Nick Debellis (Horace Greeley) maj. dec. No. 2 Jonathan Abzun (Ossining), 9-1. The lowdown: Debellis is really breaking out this year. Abzun is no pushover and beating him 9-1 is really good. Debellis placed fourth at Eastern States, then won Somers and now this.
157 final: No. 1 Chris Nocca (Horace Greeley) tech. fall No. 2 Matthew Clyman (Lakeland/Panas), 17-1. The lowdown: The Brown commit Nocca continues his great senior season with another title. He is a favorite for the Section 1 title and he’s got to be considered a podium possibility at states.
165 final: No. 1 George Johnson (Iona Prep) maj. dec. No. 2 Luke Ryan (Fox Lane), 20-11. The lowdown: A good win for Johnson in what’s been an awesome senior year. Tough match for Ryan, but he’s shown himself very capable of wrestling and rising to the level of great wrestlers. We haven’t seen the last of either of these two.
175 final: No. 1 Tyler Caricati (Yorktown) dec. No. 2 Ralphie Rodriguez (Iona Prep), 7-5. The lowdown: Very good win for Caricati over a quality opponent. A bit of a rough bout, but Caricati stayed composed and got the job done.
190 final: No. 2 Lorenzo Gunzer (Iona Prep) dec. No. 1 T.J. Mauro (Somers), 5-4. The lowdown: No more excuses forgetting about Gunzer, when you look at 190, which may be the deepest and have the most parity, again, of any weight class around here. Mauro accounted for himself well, and nearly pulled off his second title in a week.
215 final: No. 4 Andrew Brauning (Fox Lane) dec. No. 3 Max Laskowski (Horace Greeley), 4-2. The lowdown: With Rocco Lore competing at Minisink, 215 was wide open and the upstart junior Brauning took advantage to win a county title. After Lore, 215 has so many wild cards. Brauning beat Iona Prep’s Elijah Pye, who beat top-seeded Jack Anderson of Rye. Laskowski outlasted a tough Caiden Hylton of Mount Vernon in the semis. But here, Brauning got the job done. Have a good day and good things happen.
285 final: No. 2 Samuel Richardson (Stepinac) pinned No. 1 Vasilos Pavlides (Iona Prep), 1:40. The lowdown: Richardson won the battle of Catholic League superheavyweights in convincing fashion.
A look back at live updates
We’re here live with results from the Westchester County wrestling championships at Sleepy Hollow High School.
Also, we’ll have coverage of the Rockland County wrestling championships at Tappan Zee High School.
We had a couple of 100th wins today with Somers’ Derek Kuchinsky and New Rochelle’s Matteo Crino reaching the milestone.
At Westchester, Iona Prep’s Fotis Koufalis decisioned top-seed Nick Fortugno, 7-5, in the semis at 126 to advance to the final, in probably the upset of the morning. Lakeland/Panas’ Daniel Horowitz beat top-seeded Ronan Sutter of Rye by a 17-2 tech fall. At 144, top-seeded Ryan Ball lost a 12-5 decision to Tuskers teammate Cal Ehrmann in the semifinals. At 215, top-seeded Jack Anderson of Rye lost to Iona Prep’s Elijah Pye in the quarterfinals.
Port Chester’s Laila Builes, the 2025 100-pound girls state champion, returned from injury, losing her round of 16 bout and winning her first wrestleback. Nyack’s Emily Rodriguez, who won the 2025 185-pound girls state title, will miss the rest of the season with a season-ending knee injury, according to Nyack coach J.P. Ospina. Rodriguez won the Eastern States title earlier this month.
We will fill in semifinals and finals matches and results as we go.
