Maine-Endwell, Deposit-Hancock lose in baseball state championship games

Bids by the Maine-Endwell and Deposit-Hancock baseball teams to win state titles June 14 came up short.

Defending champion Maine-Endwell fell 2-0 to Section 5’s Pittsford Mendon in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A final at Binghamton University.

Section 2’s Saratoga Catholic sent Deposit-Hancock to its first loss of the season, 4-0, in Saturday’s Class C championship game at BU.

Class A: Pittsford Mendon 2, Maine-Endwell 0

Ethan Postle and Eli Charatz combined on a six-hitter as Pittsford Mendon shut out the Spartans.

Postle went 6 1/3 innings, struck out 12 and walked four.

Charatz entered with one out and two on in the seventh and retired both batters he faced to close out the game.

Michael Jamba tossed a four-hitter for Maine-Endwell. He struck out two and walked two.

Aidan Lerner-Morelle drove in both runs with RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings.

Maine-Endwell finished with a 14-10 record after beating Kings Park, 5-3, in last year’s Class A state final.

Class C: Saratoga Catholic 4, Deposit-Hancock 0

Pierce Byrne tossed a one-hitter to lead Section 2’s Saratoga Catholic to the championship.

Byrne struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter. He took a perfect game into the final inning before Brody Matthews singled with one out.

Ryan Gillis hit a three-run homer in the opening inning for Saratoga, which added another run in the fourth on an error.

Blake Fortunato went the distance for D-H. He gave up six hits, struck out six and walked three over six innings.

Deposit-Hancock, Class D state champion in 2022, finished with a 23-1 record.
