A Cattaraugus County motorist was killed on Sunday, Aug. 23 in a one-vehicle crash in the town of Freedom, Machias-based New York State Police said.
Troopers said a 2021 Ford Explorer driven by Phillip E. Schramm, 36, of Freedom was eastbound on state Route 98 approaching Galen Hill Road at about 5:30 a.m. when it left the roadway, rolled once and came to rest against a tree.
Schramm was ejected from the vehicle, troopers said.
State police and emergency medical personnel responded to the crash and attempted life saving measures, but Schramm was pronounced deceased at the scene.
State police said an autopsy was scheduled at Olean General Hospital.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is pending, according to troopers.
