CMP plans job growth, expansion of battery manufacturing in Binghamton

A Canadian firm will be growing its operations in the Southern Tier with the help of an $850,000 Empire State Development grant.

CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions plans to modernize its 90 Bevier St. facility in the City of Binghamton as part of an expansion project. Modernization efforts will allow the company to manufacture nearly all of its battery storage component parts and sub-assemblies in Binghamton.

CMP has committed to creating up to 62 new jobs in the region as part of its expansion and modernization efforts.

The project’s total cost will be slightly over $8.8 million, with Empire State Development providing an $850,000 capital grant to support the project. According to Empire State Development CEO Hope Knight, the development strengthens Binghamton’s status as a hub for battery manufacturing.

“The Southern Tier continues to advance its reputation as a hub for battery industry research, innovation, and advanced manufacturing,” said Knight. “The state’s investments in CMP Advanced Mechanical Solutions, coupled with other projects and facilities like Binghamton University’s Battery-NY facility, are supporting the development, commercialization, and manufacturing of this dynamic industry, creating jobs and super-charging regional economic growth.”

CMP invests in new equipment to fuel growth in Binghamton

CMP originally purchased the Binghamton-based facility in 2006. According to CEO Steve Zimmermann, the investment and expansion reflect the company’s long-held belief in Binghamton, and more broadly New York state.

“CMP has been committed to North American manufacturing since our inception, and the continued investment in our Binghamton operations over the past 20 years demonstrates our commitment to New York State, the Southern Tier, and the city of Binghamton,” said Zimmerman.

“The manufacturing technology and infrastructure investments being made with the assistance of this Empire State Development grant will allow us to meet growing Customer demand for Energy Storage products, improve operational efficiency, and support long-term business growth.”

The project will support the acquisition and installation of new equipment including fiber lasers, press brakes and vertical milling machining centers, which will help the company meet the needs of an expanding base of customers. A new, automated paint line is currently being installed, with final touches expected by June 2026.

The investment comes just over two years after Binghamton’s New Energy New York project was designated a federal tech hub, opening the area to investment and growth in the battery manufacturing industry.

“Another notch has been added to help solidify Upstate NY as a core of America’s battery belt!” U.S. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer stated. “CMP’s nearly $9 million expansion in Binghamton shows how the Southern Tier is leading the charge to bring battery manufacturing back to America.”

In a press release, Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham thanked partners in state and federal government for supporting the project, stating it showcased Binghamton’s position as a growing manufacturing center.

“This is another strong signal that manufacturing in the City of Binghamton is growing and thriving,” said Kraham. “CMP’s decision to expand its operations here reflects confidence in our community’s future and the strength of our workforce. This investment means more good-paying jobs in our urban core and reinforces Binghamton’s role as a hub for next-generation advanced manufacturing.”
