Meet the nominees for Press-Citizen’s Athlete of the Week, Nov. 17- 23

The championship round of the Iowa high school football playoffs featured two Iowa City-area teams — Iowa City Regina and Iowa City Liberty.

The Regals suffered a 34-27 overtime loss to West Lyon in the 1A championship game. The Lightning fell, 27-20, to Dowling Catholic in the 5A finale.

The Iowa high school girls wrestling season began last week with Iowa City High, Iowa City West and Iowa City Liberty taking part in the Little Hawks Girls Invitational on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s high school Athlete of the Week for Nov. 17-23. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week’s winner. Voting closes at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Athletes are listed in alphabetical order by last name.

Adrian Clerry, Jr., Iowa City Liberty

Clerry caught Liberty football’s only touchdown in its 27-10 loss to Dowling Catholic in the 5A state title game.

Clerry nabbed a five-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Reece Rettig in the third quarter. He totaled six catches for 66 yards and a score.

Tessa Driscoll, Sr., Iowa City High

Driscoll led the City High girls basketball team in scoring during its 55-44 road win over Central DeWitt on Nov. 22.

Driscoll scored 25 points in City High’s season opener against the Sabers.

Shaona Emmanuel, Sr., Iowa City High

Emmanuel placed first at 155 pounds at the Little Hawks Girls Invitational on Nov. 18.

Emmanuel pinned all four of her opponents to start the wrestling season.

Evalynn Karam, Soph., Iowa City Liberty

Karam placed first at 110 pounds at the Little Hawks Girls Invitational.

Karam went 4-0 in tournament competition. She secured three falls and a technical fall.

Carter Slager, Sr., Iowa City Regina

Slager made a huge play in Regina football’s 34-27 loss to West Lyon in the 1A state title game.

Slager caught a 58-yard touchdown from quarterback Kyle Tracy in the second quarter.
