A woman is dead, an Iowa State trooper is injured and one man is in custody following a shooting in Stuart.
Patrol vehicles from the Iowa State Patrol and local law enforcement, as well as the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, had multiple roads blocked off with their lights flashing along Stuart’s South Division Street, which runs through town.
A report of shots fired was called in at around 3:35 p.m. in the 200 block of Southwest Sixth Street in Stuart, said Iowa DCI Special Agent in Charge Adam DeCamp. Stuart police, the Adair and Guthrie County sheriff’s offices and the Iowa State Patrol responded to the call.
“An Iowa State trooper was among the first officers to arrive,” DeCamp said. “Shortly after doing so, the trooper came in contact with an adult male armed with a gun. The trooper was shot.”
Other responding officers took the man into custody without further incident and also rendered aid to the trooper, DeCamp said.
The trooper was transported to a hospital in the Des Moines area where he continues to receive medical treatment. DeCamp said the trooper’s condition is unknown.
Officers also found a deceased woman at the scene, DeCamp said. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.
DeCamp said there is no ongoing threat to the Stuart community.
The Iowa DCI and the Stuart Police Department are investigating the homicide and the shooting of the trooper.
The names of those involved will be released at a later date, DeCamp said.
