Iowa, already home to the world’s largest strawberry, popcorn ball and wooden nickel, has added a new record to its list: the tallest round-handled brick trowel in the world.
Marshalltown, a manufacturer of construction tools and equipment based in Marshalltown, unveiled its new Trowel Plaza on Friday, Nov. 14, where the new record-breaking trowel is located.

Standing an impressive 32 feet tall and sporting the company’s signature “DuraSoft” handle, the sculpture is designed to tell the story of a long-standing, trusted fixture of the town, according to a company news release.
“The thriving times in Marshalltown have always been driven by industry leaders standing up and making bold investments in facilities, people, and community,” Marshalltown Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO John Hall said in the release.
On the back wall of the plaza stand panels illustrating key chapters in Marshalltown’s history: its founding in 1890, the employees who helped the company thrive, its expansion to Arkansas, the company’s global presence and its ongoing investment in facilities and the future.
“Our idea for this plaza is that this is a place for our citizens and visitors to gather and to celebrate the legacy of the men and women who have made MARSHALLTOWN’s tools since 1890 and on the same site in Marshalltown, Iowa, since 1902,” company President and CEO Joe Carter said in the release.
The project marks the newest effort to advance the city’s Arts and Culture Master Plan.
“Our community made a commitment to creativity to ensure that the arts are not an accessory but the driving force in developing our community,” said Arts and Culture Alliance Executive Director Amber Danielson. “This space brings that vision to life. It connects history, industry, and art in a way that fosters pride, curiosity, and belonging.”
The record‑breaking trowel adds to Iowa’s long tradition of superlatives.
Across the state, you’ll find things like the 15-foot fiberglass strawberry in Strawberry Point; a 9,370-pound popcorn ball in Sac City; Albert the 45‑ton, 30-foot bull in Audubon; a 35-foot Swedish coffee pot water tower in Stanton; and the world’s largest wooden nickel in Davenport.
