DYERSVILLE – When Iowa Cubs manager Marty Pevey got on the bus to take his team to the Field of Dreams movie site on Aug. 11, he had a message for everyone on board.
“I was like, “It’s so good to see you guys,’” Pevey recalled.
Pevey missed the players and coaches on his Triple-A team after being away from the club due to a health scare. He recently underwent surgery to remove a pair of melanoma tumors on his rib cage.
“I wanted it out as soon as possible,” Pevey said.
Pevey is the longest-tenured manager in franchise history and holds the club record for most career wins. He figured the tumors were skin tags or moles. But a recent biopsy discovered differently.
The surgery successfully removed both of the tumors, Pevey said. But it forced him to miss Iowa’s entire road trip to Indianapolis.
Tuesday’s game at the new Field of Dreams ballpark is his first one back with the team. He didn’t like being away from his players and coaches.
“I wanted to get back for all the games,” Pevey said.
Pevey said he’ll have some follow-up appointments and may have to undergo some chemotherapy treatments. He hopes it doesn’t impact much more of his season. He doesn’t believe the recent health troubles have anything to do with a brain tumor he had been previously diagnosed with.
