As we all know by now, former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly was recently fired by LSU, leaving a huge hole in its program.
Another move that the Tiger made was changing athletic directors, as news was announced on Thursday that Verge Ausberry, father of Irish linebacker Jaiden, will be the interim until a full-time replacement is found. He very well could end up being the choice, and there is a natural relationship with current Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.
He has already been linked as being a candidate for the job, and while many don’t think a move could happen, it is college football. The Ausberry’s clearly had confidence that Freeman would be the best option for their son, and could test the waters to see if he’s interested in moving to Baton Rouge.
I don’t think Freeman has any intentions of leaving South Bend, but like in recruiting, relationships matter. It would make sense for Ausberry to at least have a conversation with him about replacing Kelly, and hopefully the answer is a firm no. We will see if anything comes out of this, as it’s definitely a situation to monitor going forward.
