The depth of the wide receiver room remains a question mark for the Indianapolis Colts. So could we see an addition made at this position?
“We are looking,” head coach Shane Steichen said on Sunday, via Colts.com. “We are always looking and doing our research in that. But I like the group we got. Those guys are battling right now. So we’ll see where that all goes.”
At the moment, both Alec Pierce and Josh Downs are sidelined with injuries. There isn’t a specific timeline for Pierce’s return, while Downs could be back on the field Tuesday for the Colts’ joint practice with New England.
Beyond those two, the third starting wide receiver role is up for grabs. It also remains to be seen how the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots on the depth chart will shake out.
Ashton Dulin and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine are the favorites for the WR3 role. Laquon Treadwell was in the mix, but has missed the last few practices with an injury. Competing for a roster spot are Anthony Gould, Deion Burks, and Coleman Owen.
Whoever ends up as WR3 — and perhaps the Colts choose to utilize more of a rotation — won’t be tasked with replacing Michael Pittman’s production on their own. Pierce, Downs, and Tyler Warren will help shoulder that workload.
That said, if the Colts don’t have a steady presence at WR3, that does make defending Downs and Pierce easier for opponents, who can devote their attention to those two. Consistency from those competing for those snaps has been up-and-down in these training camp practices.
Keenan Allen is the big name still available on the free agent market at wide receiver.
