St. Joseph County has a plethora of school board seats up for election this year, and this November will be the first to see the state law making school board races partisan in effect. Despite that law allowing party affiliation, most local candidates did not list a party.
So who’s in the running? Here’s this year’s slate of candidates with their listed party, if any.
South Bend Community School Corp.
SBCSC has three of its seven seats up for grabs this year — District 1, District 2 and District 5, currently held by Kate Lee, Mark Costello and Stuart Greene, respectively. According to the county’s candidate filings, neither Greene nor Lee is seeking reelection.

Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp.
The ballot at P-H-M consists entirely of incumbent candidates, with four of seven seats up for grabs this year.

School City of Mishawaka
Only one seat is up for election this year at Mishawaka schools.
Mishawaka’s school district, unlike others in the area, has a hybrid board; three of the five seats are elected, while the other two are appointed — one by the city’s common council, and the other by the mayor.

Three seats are up for grabs this year at John Glenn, representing Lincoln, Liberty and Polk townships.

Two of LaVille’s five seats are up for election this year, with current members Rodd Decker and Joseph Czarnecki not seeking reelection, according to online candidate filings.
