LAFAYETTE, IN — Northbound traffic on Interstate 65 remained slow during Wednesday’s morning commute several hours after a semi caught fire, according to an Indiana State Police report.
Tippecanoe County sheriff’s bulletins indicate that a vehicle fire was reported about 5:15 a.m. Wednesday about a mile north of the Indiana 43 exit.
At 11 a.m., Indiana State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Jeremy Piers sent an email that stated: “The driver was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The semi truck became fully engulfed in flames before being extinguished by the Tippecanoe Township Fire Department. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.”
Pier’s email makes no mention of the semi crashing, although an early-morning Facebook post by Indiana State Police indicated that the semi crashed.
At 7:20 a.m., Indiana State Police reported that clean-up work continued on the interstate.
A 9:30 a.m. Indiana Department of Transportation camera at the Indiana 43 exit showed that traffic remained backed up in the northbound lanes.
By 11:20 a.m., traffic video cameras at the Indiana 43 exit showed northbound traffic moving as normal.
