Riley Schellhammer leaves Lawrence Central girls basketball team

INDIANAPOLIS — Riley Schellhammer is no longer with the Lawrence Central girls basketball program, coach Jannon Lampley confirmed Saturday night. The 5-8 sophomore point guard, who transferred from Fishers following her freshman season, averaged around 18 points, four rebounds and two steals in four games.

Schellhammer was not in attendance for No. 2 Lawrence Central’s 68-32 win over Fort Wayne Snider at Pike on Saturday, and neither was her father, assistant coach Eric Schellhammer.

“We wish (Riley Schellhammer) the best and much success on her basketball journey,” Lampley wrote in a text to IndyStar Sunday. “At this time, I have to take the steps to progress my team forward, so we can progress and continue in a positive direction.”

She declined further comment.

Eric Schellhammer confirmed Sunday that he quit and removed his daughter from the team.

Regarded among the state’s best 2028 prospects, Schellhammer played her freshman season at Fishers, where she averaged 13.8 points on 36% shooting (29% from 3), plus 5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.3 steals through 23 games. She transferred to Lawrence Central over the summer, joining a Bears outfit that already included nationally ranked LSU commit Lola Lampley and DePaul commit Aniyah McKenzie, and also added Lawrence North senior transfer Keke Butler and Ben Davis senior transfer Aburi Ingram.

Butler, who won a state championship last season with the Wildcats, committed to Boston College in October and was immediately eligible; Ingram made her LC debut Saturday after sitting out the mandated 30 days as a senior transfer.

Schellhammer was immediately eligible under the IHSAA’s new transfer rules.

Though not the team’s primary ball-handler, Schellhammer is expected to play point guard in college, and was off to a strong start with her new team, posting back-to-back 21-point, two-assist, three-steal performances against Carmel and Westfield. She shined against Hamilton Southeastern, as well, scoring 11 points on a tidy 4-for-7 shooting with two 3-pointers.

Stats were not yet available from Lawrence Central’s 57-47 win over Pendleton Heights on Nov. 18.

The Bears (5-0) are off until Dec. 6 when they travel to Dixie Heights, Kentucky for a tournament.

Schellhammer would be eligible to play again immediately this season if she transferred back to Fishers, as IHSAA bylaws allow for athletes to retain eligibility if they return to their original school within 365 days. Otherwise, it appears that, unless there is a bona fide change of residence (and even that includes certain stipulations and exceptions that could complicate her case), Schellhammer will be required to sit out at least 30 days and up to a year.

The sophomore may opt to sit out the remainder of the season to focus on training. She could also enroll at a prep school, where even if she’s unable to play immediately with the season already in progress, she could at least begin familiarizing herself with her new school and program.
