Marcus Freeman expands on a few important battles as fall camp ends

A good portion of fall camp is for teams to figure out who is going to be a major contributor, and for Notre Dame that is no different.

However, sometimes those battles aren’t finished when fall camp ends, as Irish head coach Marcus Freeman told the media on Friday afternoon. Notre Dame has many of its spots already accounted for, but two aren’t settled, the backup quarterback and field cornerback.

Freeman talked about the running backs, and while he didn’t name a starter, he said we’ll see Aneyas Williams, Nolan James Jr., and Kedron Young. He said to expect to see at least five backs play this fall.

The field corner is between two transfers, Colorado’s DJ McKinney and Michigan’s Jayden Sanders. While the two are still battling for the starting job, expect to see plenty of both of them on the field. They’re good enough to play, and clearly making it a difficult decision for the coaches.

Now, back to the quarterbacks. Freeman didn’t specifically name any player, noting that the battle will be ending fairly soon, as he wants the backup to get as many reps as possible. It’s a group of young players like Teddy Jarrard, Noah Grubbs, and Blake Hebert. To me, this is one of the most important battles of the fall, even though CJ Carr has the potential to be an All-American.

It will be interesting which way Notre Dame ends up going in these battles, but we now as camp ends, they’re not settled.
