LAWRENCE NORTH AT CENTER GROVE (more here)
Center Grove 38, Lawrence North 35, F (more here)
Center Grove needed a touchdown. It had 85 seconds to get it and 62 yards to travel.
“I’m thinking we’re going to score,” Center Grove sophomore quarterback Oscar Sloan said of taking the field. “I knew we were going to score. It was in our mind before it happened.”
How it happened: Sloan marched the Class 6A fourth-ranked Trojans down the field with major contributions from sophomore running back Jayden Biggerstaff and the offensive line. Lincoln Bright’s 2-yard plunge into the end zone with 15.1 seconds remaining provided the winning score in Center Grove’s 38-35 win over 6A No. 7 Lawrence North.
Turning point: There was not as much one turning point as a series of twists and turns in the fourth quarter. After Dallas Cornpropst drilled a 30-yard field goal with 3:37 left to give Center Grove (7-1) a 31-28 lead, Lawrence North (6-2) marched right back down the field after a failed onsides kick attempt. Junior running back Izayveon Moore’s 21-yard touchdown run with 1:31 left put the Wildcats ahead, 35-31. But that proved to be too much time for Center Grove, which still had all three of its timeouts remaining.
Player of the game: Biggerstaff. The sophomore did not know if he was going to be able to play after missing two weeks with a high ankle sprain to his right foot. But he carried the load for the Trojans with 270 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries. Brodie Hilton added 85 rushing yards and a TD on 16 carries. Moore was outstanding again for Lawrence North, running for 152 yards and three TDs on 23 carries.
Play of the game: Bright’s jump over the top for the game-winning TD probably wins this category for importance to the final score. But Moore’s 21-yard go-ahead touchdown was a thing of beauty. He ran straight ahead for about six yards, spun his way out of a would-be tackle and then sprinted to the end zone.

WARREN CENTRAL AT CARMEL (more here)
Carmel 42, Warren Central 7, F (more here)
The Greyhounds pounded the ground.
The Greyhounds rushed for 315 yards in their 42-7 victory over Warren Central. Led by senior running back Andrew Pemberton (25 carries, 169 yards, two touchdowns) and junior running back Josiah Gilmore (eight carries, 64 yards and two touchdowns), the Greyhounds were able to execute coach Kevin Wright’s game plan to perfection.
”That’s always our priority because the running game opens up the passing game,” Wright said. “If you can control the football and be patient and run it, they start bringing safeties in the box, and it opens things up on the perimeter. That’s been our formula. We got to run the ball, especially in the Midwest, because it’s going to get cold at some point.”
Turning point: Warren Central had the opportunity to cut the Carmel lead to 14-7 during its first trip inside the red zone toward the end of the first quarter. Warriors quarterback Jack Quillen stepped up in the pocket to evade defenders and fired a pass to junior Keysean Williams-Jarrett. But senior cornerback Aaron Fedorcha never left Williams-Jarrett’s hip and broke up a pass traveling straight into the receiver’s body. The stop forced a turnover on downs. Carmel extended its lead to 21-0 on the following offensive drive.
Player of the game: Senior running back Andrew Pemberton had 25 carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Pemberton now has 826 yards and nine touchdowns this season.
Play of the game: It’s 4th and 11 at Warren Central’s 32-yard line. The ball’s snapped, and Carmel quarterback Anthony Coellner already has his eyes on Spencer Sell. Coellner takes a few steps to his left in the pocket, gets a clear view of his star receiver, and floats a ball over the defender’s head to find Sell on a corner route for a 21-yard gain. The play set up Carmel’s fourth rushing touchdown on the night and running back Andrew Pemberton’s second

BISHOP CHATARD AT TRI-WEST
Bishop Chatard 42, Tri-West 13, F (more here)
LIZTON – Class 4A top-ranked Chatard scored four straight touchdowns in the first half, and cruised to a 42-13 win over 3A No. 8 host Tri-West. Trojans coach Rob Doyle pulled several key starters at halftime.
Chatard’s sixth straight unanswered led to a 35-point lead and a running clock with 4:25 left in the third quarter.
Here are a few observations from the Trojans’ blowout win:
Turning Point: Tri-West (6-2) looked ready to challenge Chatard (7-1) early. The Bruins took the opening kickoff 90 yards over 13 plays capped by a nine-yard touchdown throw from junior quarterback Jack Sorgi to junior receiver Jax Garver for a 7-0 lead.
On Chatard’s second play from scrimmage, junior running back Danny Adams broke loose for a 36-yard gain. Tri-West’s Jett Lawson stripped the ball, but Adams managed to recover his own fumble. On the ensuing play, Chatard senior quarterback Jack Harrington suffered the Trojans’ second fumble on the drive, and this time Tri-West recovered. However, a Chatard player punched the ball out during the return and Chatard recovered.
Two plays later, Adams took the handoff untouched up the middle for a 17-yard touchdown. Had the Bruins recovered, they could have potentially gone up two scores. Instead, the Trojans found their footing and never looked back, scoring on six consecutive drives.
Top Performer: Despite the early fumble, Adams was dominant. He had 125 yards rushing on 10 carries for Chatard – all in the first half – to go with touchdown runs of 17 and 43 yards. On the season, Adams has rushed for more than 1,300 yards with 24 touchdowns.
Play of the Game: Junior receiver Julio Graves caught a pair of touchdowns for Chatard, but his first was an impressive pass and catch play, with Harrington lofting a throw from the right side of the field to the left corner of the end zone. Graves pulled down the throw tapping his feet inbounds for a 14-7 lead. He finished with five catches for 54 yards, adding a 21-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. Harrington completed 13-of-18 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half.

PLAINFIELD AT WHITELAND (more here)
Whiteland 30, Plainfield 20, F (more here)
WHITELAND – Lights out.
The Class 5A No. 10 Whiteland Warriors have personified the phrase the past four weeks since opening the season 1-2.
On Friday night against 5A No. 6 Plainfield, the Warriors proved it, once again, and overcame it, quite literally, to win their fifth straight game, 30-20.
With 5 minutes, 21 seconds remaining until halftime at James Sleighter Field the field lights went dark inside Bailey and Wood Stadium due to a faulty generator.
For 2 hours and 18 minutes – from the pre-blackout’s final play to the players retaking the field – nothing
more than the stadium’s high-tech scoreboard, press box and common areas illuminated, as REMC of Johnson County swiftly replaced the damaged equipment.
The Warriors (6-2, 5-1 Mid-State), who clung to a 13-7 lead when the lights went out, watched the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners battle from afar, but inside their locker room, there was one goal in mind once play resumed.
“One of our key components on a yearly basis, daily basis, weekly basis, is start fast. Every day you come out, you got to start fast,” Whiteland coach Darrin Fisher said. “We’ve referred to ourselves as the storm coming over the bow of the ship. How strong can that storm be?”
