LAFAYETTE, IN — A former orthopedic surgeon who made national news after he was accused of plotting to kill an ex-wife in 2014 has been arrested on suspicion of theft with prior convictions.
Gregory Konrath, 60, of the 3100 block of New London Court in Lafayette, shoplifted about 30 items from Walmart on Aug. 13, including food such as frozen bean burritos and salad mix, according to Lafayette police. He also stole wiper blades and cologne, police said.
Officers arrested Konrath outside his apartment on Thursday night on suspicion of theft, a Level 6 felony. He posted a $500 bond and bailed out of the Tippecanoe County Jail on Friday.
When he was still an orthopedic surgeon, Konrath made national news after he was arrested and charged with attempted murder in Miami County, after his girlfriend recorded him plotting to kill his wife, according to news reports. The attempted murder charge was dropped because of an Indiana Appeals Court ruling, and he was convicted of stalking. He later was charged with escape after he cut off his home-detention GPS tracking device and fled to Arizona.
Konrath was sentenced to nine years in prison in 2015 and was released from the Indiana Department of Correction in October 2022, according to state records.
Last month, Konrath pleaded guilty in Tippecanoe County of two misdemeanor charges of theft for twice stealing from Meijer in January 2026.
He received a suspended sentence of 185 days in jail in one case and a suspended 180 days in the other case.
It is not known yet whether prosecutors will file a request with the court to revoke his suspended sentence and require him to serve out the remaining time.
