Evaluating Anthony Richardson's performance v. Falcons in preseason

With Riley Leonard getting the start for the Indianapolis Colts against the Atlanta Falcons, it was Anthony Richardson’s turn to take over in the second half. So how did things go for Richardson in Week 2 of the preseason?

Like Leonard, it was tough sledding through the air for Richardson as well. He finished the game completing just 3-of-9 passes for 24 yards at a lowly 2.7 yards per attempt.

Not helping matters was the play of the offensive line unit, with Richardson facing regular pressure. And on several of Richardson’s pass attempts, there appeared to be little separation between the Colts’ wide receiver and the defensive back.

That said, where he did differentiate himself was with his ability to extend plays. On a fourth-quarter drive into Falcons’ territory, Richardson turned two near sacks into positive gains, picking up a first down in one instance.

We also saw the Colts utilize more zone reads with Richardson, adding another element that defenses have to account for. I’ll also add that when Richardson has been under duress, he’s appeared more comfortable handling it this season.

Shane Steichen said earlier this week that he doesn’t have a timetable when it comes to making a decision on who the backup will be.

From the outside looking in, it’s been difficult to decipher up to this point who has the upper hand in this battle. That said, Richardson has had the better overall preseason performance over the last two weeks, and his mobility has helped set him a part, even when the passing game is sputtering.
