The Indianapolis Colts’ backup quarterback competition did the opposite of inspire confidence during Saturday’s 34-6 preseason loss to the Atlanta Falcons.
That performance earned both Anthony Richardson Sr. and Riley Leonard spots on CBS Sports’ list of NFL preseason Week 2 losers.
“The backup quarterback situation is pretty bleak,” CBS Sports noted.
Richardson played the second half and completed 3 of 9 passes for 24 yards while taking two sacks.
CBS Sports recognized that Richardson played behind a struggling offensive line and received little help from his pass catchers, but the circumstances didn’t completely excuse the showing.
Meanwhile, Leonard started the game and completed 7 of 14 passes for 62 yards.
The outing represented a step back for Richardson after an efficient preseason opener against the New England Patriots. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 145 yards in that game and added 53 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Leonard finished the opener 10 of 21 for 89 yards with an interception.
The two quarterbacks have been competing throughout training camp to serve as Daniel Jones’ primary backup, but with only one preseason game left, Saturday’s contest needed better QB quality to shore up the position.
