The Indianapolis Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor have agreed to a two-year contract extension. Let’s check in on what grades the Colts received for this deal.
According to Ian Rapoport, this is a two-year deal worth $44 million and has a max value of $47 million. This extension includes $39 million guaranteed as well.
Taylor was set to enter the final year of his deal, but he will now remain with the Colts through the 2028 season.

What Christian D’Andrea said: “Ultimately, this deal will come down to availability. Ballard has indicated he thinks 2025 was a breakthrough season derailed by injury and he’s happy to see it through in 2026. That means a steady dose of carries for Taylor and more utility as a receiver. Since this deal only takes him through his age 29 season, there’s a good chance it pays off, even as his odometer nears 1,800 total NFL rushes/receptions.”

Mike Kadlick: “On Indianapolis’s side, while they now have significant capital tied to their top three offensive players—quarterback Daniel Jones and wide receiver Alec Pierce also both signed extensions this offseason—Taylor’s deal is relatively team-friendly. He’s only on their books for three more seasons and the $39 million in guarantees is a manageable figure for their salary cap while a well-deserved raise for one of the league’s top playmakers.”

Colts Wire
Taylor is what makes this offense go. There is the obvious with his high-level production, but by providing a strong running game for the offense, that opens up the playbook for Shane Steichen and helps take some of the burden off the passing game.
Also, even with the uncertainty that potentially lies ahead beyond 2026, paying your star, game-changing players is good business.
Taylor is under contract for three more seasons and is still just 27 years old. Productive years should still be ahead.
