Illinois football is preparing for one of its most anticipated seasons in decades. The Fighting Illini open up the 2025 season on Aug. 29 with a home game against in-state opponent Western Illinois.
The Fighting Illini and coach Bret Bielema won 10 games last season, capped by a victory against South Carolina in the Citrus Bowl. Illinois returns nearly its entire starting lineup as it bids for a spot in the College Football Playoff.
The Illini were predicted to finish fifth in the Big Ten Conference by a panel of USA TODAY Network writers.
