East Peoria business went from boathouse to global energy solutions provider in 50 years

The East Peoria-based power solutions and energy systems company Enercon Engineering will mark its 50th anniversary in September.

From its beginnings in a Chillicothe boathouse in 1975, the company has expanded to a worldwide operation and is currently headquartered in a 160,000-square-foot facility in East Peoria’s Levee District. Over its five decades in business, Enercon has employed hundreds of Peoria-area residents, strengthening families and building generational ties within the community, according to chief executive officer Larry Tangel.

“Enercon is a family business that has become a business of families,” Tangel said in a news release. “We have employees whose children and grandchildren now work alongside them. That legacy of trust, loyalty, and shared purpose defines who we are.”

At 93 years old, Tangel’s father and Enercon founder Ed Tangel still comes to work nearly every day.

“I wanted my own business so I could have fun doing what I love — and just as importantly, so I could help people build a good life for their families,” Ed Tangel said. “Seeing how many lives Enercon has touched over 50 years is something I never imagined back in that little boathouse.”

Enercon has partnered with Caterpillar on many projects throughout its history. The company also serves as a solutions provider for original equipment operators, consulting engineers, and generator dealers worldwide. Enercon’s engineered systems currently power projects in over 100 countries. The firm’s products include industrial control panels, docking stations, switchgear, and complete power packaging systems for industries ranging from defense to data centers.
