Vote for the FPL Athlete of the Week

After the first round of the high school football playoffs, multiple state medal stand visits for Niceville swim and a successful cross country regional showing, we have another crop of talented stars up for Florida Power & Light Athlete of the Week.

Fort Walton Beach’s Sawyer Downs was last week’s winner, joining classmate Diandre Mayes, Walton’s Whitton West, Niceville’s Teray Geiger and Jakobe Gilyard, Crestview’s Manwell Robinson and Trey Hardman, Freeport’s Emily Doi, South Walton’s Connor Rooney and Maci Jones, and Choctaw’s Tamen Zabetakis and Jordan Figueroa as past winners. Who’ll follow their lead? That’s for you to decide.

Athlete of the Week Nominees

Max Baker, South Walton: The senior had four catches for 183 yards and two touchdowns in South Walton’s 42-3 win over Freport at The Hawks Nest. The third-seeded Seahawks advance to face second-seeded Pensacola Catholic Friday on the road for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in the Region 1-2A semifinals.

Elisabeth Breck, Niceville: Breck won the 100-yard backstroke in 55.50 seconds, was fourth in the 200-yard IM in 2:06.60 and teamed up with Emma Michel, Charlene Williams and Stella Landreneau to finish fifth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.06) and teamed up with Reanna Panarisi, Lila Barton and Landreneau to finish sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:39.61).

Isabel Harter, Choctawhatchee: The senior was runner-up in the Region 1-3A meet with a time of 18 minutes and 37.20 seconds.

Wyatt Straight, Baker: The two-way star delivered two interceptions, including a pick-six, in Baker’s Rural region semifinal rout of Liberty County. The Gators advance to the region championship to face Chiefland on the road Friday for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff (CDT).

Nicholas Ventura, Niceville: Ventura won gold at state in the 50-yard freestyle in a school-record 20:44 finish, finished second in the 100-yard freestyle in 45.12 and he teamed up with Tripp Gallemore, Joseph William Pugh and Logan Michel to win gold and set school records in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:23.58) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:05.27). The Eagles finished second in the men’s team race.
