Volleyball district tournament roundup, Gulf Breeze and Jay win district titles

District tournament winners clinch an automatic bid to the regional tournament, but teams can also strengthen their resumes for potential at-large bids.

Oct. 16

District 1-6A championship

No. 1 Gulf Breeze 3, No. 2 Niceville 1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 25-16)

Gulf Breeze (24-3) won its seventh straight district championship and automatically qualifed for the District 1-6A regional playoffs, which start Oct. 22.

District 1-3A championship

No. 1 North Bay Haven Academy 3, No. 2 Pensacola Catholic 1 (25-20, 22-25, 28-26, 25-20)

The Buccaneers beat the Crusaders in the district championship for the second straight year.

Pensacola Catholic (18-9) will wait for its regional playoffs seed in the Oct. 18 selection show.

District 1-1A semfinals

At North Florida Christian

No. 1 Community Christian 1, No. 4 L.E.A.D Academy 0 (25-13, 25-16, 21-9)

L.E.A.D Academy (3-15) is eliminated and its season is over.

Rural District 1 Championship

At Northview

No. 1 Jay 3, No. 2 Baker 2 (25-13, 15-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-10)

Jay (21-4) ended Baker’s streak of 22 straight district championships. The Royals automatically qualified for the Rural Region 1 playoffs, which begin on Oct. 25.

Oct. 14

District 1-6A semifinals

No. 2 Niceville 3, No. 6 Navarre 1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16)

Navarre (9-15) is eliminated and its season is over.

No. 1 Gulf Breeze 3, No. 4 Tate 1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17)

Gulf Breeze (23-3) will host Niceville in the district championship on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The winner will automatically qualify for the Region 1-6A tournament, which is scheduled to begin Oct. 22.

Tate is eliminated and its season is likely over. The Aggies entered the District 1-6A tournmaent as the second team out of the Region 1-6A playoffs,

District 1-5A semifinals

No. 2 Choctawhatchee 3, No. 3 Booket T. Washington 1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22)

Booker T. Washington (11-15) is eliminated and its season is over.

District 1-4A semifinals

No. 2 Bay 3, No. 3 Pensacola 2 (25-18, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25, 15-13)

Pensacola (12-11) is eliminated and will now wait for the Region 1-4A playoff seeding. The Tigers entered the district tournament as the projected No. 6 seed in the region bracket.

District 1-3A semifinals

No. 2 Pensacola Catholic 3, No. 3 Freeport 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-17)

Pensacola Catholic (18-8) will play at No. 1 North Bay Haven Academy on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. The Crusaders haven’t won a district title since 2015 The winner will automatically qualify for the Region 1-3A playoffs, which begin Oct. 21.

District 1-1A quarterfinals

At North Florida Christian

No. 4 L.E.A.D Academy 3, No. 5 FAMU DRS 1 (25-21, 25-11, 16-25, 25-14)

L.E.A.D Academy (3-14) will play No. 1 Community Christian in the semifinals on Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. at North Florida Christian.

Rural District 1 Semifinals

At Northview

No. 2 Baker 3, No. 3 Central 2 (17-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-8)

Baker pulled off a reverse sweep and will play for its 23rd straight district title.

Central’s Callie Pose recorded a team-high 20 kills and 19 digs. Cloe Poole added 10 kills and 9 digs. Natalie Blair finished with eight kills.

Emma Posey chipped in 21 assists and nine digs. Laney Matthews finished with a double-double of 21 assists and 13 digs.

Central (13-11) is eliminated and its season is over. The Jaguars finish with back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2010-12.

No. 1 Jay 3, No. 4 Laurel Hill 0 (25-19, 25-8, 25-17)

Darby Godwin recorded a team-high 19 kills to lead the Royals to their fourth straight district championship appearance. Bailey Lowry totaled a team-high 29 assists and three aces.

Jay (20-4) will face No. 2 Baker in the title game on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Northview.

The winner will automatically qualify for the Rural Region 1 tournament, which will begin Oct. 25.

Oct. 13

District 1-6A Quarterfinals

No. 2 Niceville 3, No. 7 Milton 0 (25-10, 25-10, 25-11)

Harmony Taliancich and Ashley Cauley recorded four kills to lead the Panthers. Taliancich also added three blocks.

Emma Messer finished with seven assists.

Milton (10-16) is eliminated and its season is over.

No. 6 Navarre 3, No. 3 Pace 1 (25-15, 25-23, 28-30, 25-22)

Navarre (9-14) will play at No. 2 Niceville on Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.

Pace (16-8) is eliminated and will now wait for the final FHSAA power rankings to see if it qualifies for the regional playoffs. The Patriots came in as the No. 7 seed for the Region 1-6A tournament in the final regular season power rankings.

The Patriots previously swept Navarre on Aug. 27 and Oct. 4.

No. 4 Tate 3, No. 5 Crestview 0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23)

Tate (20-5) will play at No. 1 Gulf Breeze on Oct. 14 at 6 p.m.

Torrie Garrett totaled 20 kills, 10 digs and four aces to lead the Aggies. Jacey Stuart recorded a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs. Bailie Merritt also recorded a double-double, finishing with 41 assists and 12 digs. Jayla Templeman contributed a team-high 14 digs.

District 1-5A Quarterfinals

No. 4 Arnold 3, No. 5 Escambia 1 (25-17, 25-10, 12-25, 25-18)

Escambia (5-18) is eliminated and its season is over.

District 1-4A Quarterfinals

No. 4 Fort Walton Beach 3, No. 5 West Florida 0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-11)

West Florida (8-16) is eliminated and will likely miss the regional playoffs. The Jaguars were the second team out of the Region 1-4A playoffs in the final regular season power rankings.

Rural District 1 Quarterfinals

No. 5 Laurel Hill 3, No. 4 Northview 1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20)

Daviona Randolph almost had a double-double, totaling 12 kills and nine digs to lead the chiefs. Julianna Little added seven kills. Hartlie Bowman chipped in five kills, four blocks and three aces.

Emma Bowman recorded a double-double of 26 kills and 16 digs. Maggie Stewart had a team-high 24 digs.

Northview (7-11) is eliminated and its season is over.
