Sporting Jax men net first road win with late — really late — goal

Late, late wait: Scoring 11 minutes into second-half stoppage time, central defender Danny Wilson earned Sporting Club Jacksonville a 3-2 victory over Birmingham Legion FC on Aug. 22, the first USL Championship road win in the first-year club’s men’s soccer history.

Wild finish: Birmingham (3-8-8) nearly grabbed a draw with its own stoppage-time goal, when Romario Williams drilled a low blast in the 93rd minute to make it 2-2. But Wilson, a Scottish veteran who has previously played for Liverpool and Glasgow Rangers, poked home Ahmad Al Qaq’s cross from point-blank range at the far post.

Comeback trail: After falling behind to a Ronaldo Damus goal in the 55th minnute, Sporting Jax (2-14-5) responded with a lunging header from Emil Jaaskelainen and then a 20-yard volley from Wan Kuzain.

Quick free kicks: Jaaskelainen’s goal ended the club’s scoring drought at 408 minutes. … Midfielder Jean Mota collected the assist on the first goal. … Goalkeeper Jake McGuire was credited with six saves.

Up next: Sporting Jax will travel north to meet Brooklyn FC at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at Maimonides Park.
