Megan Wright retained the District 1 Brevard County School Board seat while Districts 2 and 5 will go to a runoff election in November after neither race ended with an outright majority for any candidate.
District 1 was decided outright, since only two candidates qualified, and incumbent Megan Wright defeated challenger Tara “Coach T” Gibson with 54.03% of the vote.
District 2 incumbent Gene Trent took the the plurality of votes with 41.93% and will face Kyle Savage, who received 31.33% of the vote, in the Nov. 3 runoff to decide the seat. Kelly Wentworth came in third place Tuesday with 26.88% of the vote.
The open District 5 race has Tammy Dennis and Michele McCormack heading to a Nov. 3 runoff election after Dennis received 40.94% of the vote and McCormack came in second with 36.27%. Cecilia Trotter was in third place with 27.79% of the vote.
Whoever wins the District 5 seat will replace Katye Campbell, who has held the seat since 2018. Campbell could not run again due to a redistricting measure the board approved in 2023.
School Board District 1 represents Titusville, Mims and Cocoa. District 2 represents Cocoa, Rockledge, Merritt Island, Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach. District 5 represents Melbourne south through Palm Bay.
Brevard County School Board members are limited to two four-year terms, or eight years total, under a state law that took effect in 2022. They’re paid $53,863 a year.
