Meet Congressional District 19 hopeful John Strand ahead of election

The race for Florida’s 19th Congressional District is one of the most crowded fields in the state. Voters will nominate a candidate to represent their party in the primary election Aug. 18.

Ten Republicans, three Democrats, one non-party-affiliated candidate and one write-in candidate are vying for the nomination to succeed Byron Donalds in the heavily conservative district.

John Strand, 43, is the creative director for America’s Frontline Doctors and a civil rights activist with a professional background as an actor, author and former model. Strand has lived in Naples since 2022. Describing himself as a “Maverick Conservative”, Strand has built his campaign around his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot, for which he was sentenced to more than two years in prison before receiving a pardon.

He was homeschooled and later studied business administration before starting his career in music production and the entertainment industry. Strand said he’s committed to restoring courage, common sense and Judeo-Christian values to government by prioritizing national security, economic affordability and federal accountability.

Congressional candidates are campaigning on platforms of border security, water quality and fiscal discipline to address a $39 trillion national debt as they navigate a race that remains unsettled with no clear frontrunner.

Florida’s 19th Congressional District includes most of Lee County and the coastal areas of Collier County. It is considered a Republican stronghold, where Donalds won with more than 66% of the vote in 2024, meaning the winner of the GOP primary is widely expected to represent the district in Washington, D.C.

Q&A with District 19 candidate Strand

Why are you the best person to represent Congressional District 19 in Washington, and what in your background has prepared you to serve effectively?

Because of proven character and resolve under pressure — a battle-tested conservative fighter, I organized a freedom rally that President Trump supported, helped America’s Frontline Doctors save thousands of lives during COVID, refused a false confession plea deal and suffered solitary abuse in prison as a political hostage, and I’m the only candidate to qualify with voter petition support. I’m running to restore courage, common sense and Judeo-Christian values back in government — the People’s choice.

How would you describe your political philosophy and where do you place yourself on the political spectrum? Why?

My political philosophy is rooted in the Judeo-Christian worldview and the U.S. Constitution as a fixed guardrail against tyranny. I’m a Maverick Conservative Republican — unapologetically pro-life, pro-liberty, pro-nuclear family, pro-border security and anti-uniparty. Limited government, fiscal responsibility and individual sovereignty aren’t suggestions; they’re biblical and constitutional mandates. I reject the false left-right spectrum and stand firmly on the side of truth, courage and reclaiming the Republic for We the People.

If elected, what are your top three priorities for District 19, and what specific legislation or actions would you pursue to accomplish them?

Security, affordability and accountability. Secure the border and pass my 20/20 Sovereignty Act: 20-year immigration moratorium and 20 million deportations over four years (cut off all monies to illegals) to protect American jobs, safety and culture. Cut significant spending and fraud, advance my Paycheck Freedom Act to end IRS tyranny and eliminate federal income tax, igniting GDP and lowering costs. Restore constitutional accountability by prosecuting government abuse and defunding the corrupt D.C. District Court.

Strand on affordability and growth in Southwest Florida

Affordability remains a major concern for Southwest Florida residents. What should Congress do to address the cost of housing, insurance, health care, energy and other everyday expenses while promoting economic growth and fiscal responsibility?

Congress must stop inflating the dollar and crushing families with big-government policies. My 20/20 Sovereignty Act and Paycheck Freedom Act protect American jobs, resources and boosts GDP and take-home pay. Dismantle the climate cult to ignite American energy for lower costs, reform zoning/regulations on housing, pass real tort reform and price transparency in health care and insurance, cut wasteful spending. Prosperity comes from liberty and fiscal sanity — not more debt and bureaucracy.

Southwest Florida faces ongoing challenges involving growth, infrastructure, environmental protection, water quality, hurricane resilience, and disaster recovery. What role should the federal government play in addressing these issues?

The federal government’s role is strictly constitutional: support national defense, secure borders and provide targeted disaster recovery after hurricanes — not micromanage growth or turn environmental concerns into wealth-redistribution schemes. I will fight for rapid, accountable FEMA reform, smart infrastructure funding without green mandates and practical water quality solutions that protect both the Everglades and property rights. Local control and fiscal responsibility must come first. No more blank checks or climate cult pork.

Hot topics: Immigration, foreign aid and social policy

What are your views on border security and immigration reform, including deportation policies, ICE and border patrol regulation, birthright citizenship and the role of states, especially Florida, in immigration enforcement? What is your opinion about Alligator Alcatraz?

Border security is national survival. I authored the 20/20 Sovereignty Act: a 20-year immigration moratorium and 20 million deportations over four years. End catch-and-release, fully fund and empower ICE and clarify that birthright citizenship does not apply to children of illegal aliens. States like Florida must lead enforcement. Alligator Alcatraz is an excellent, no-nonsense idea — secure detention and swift removal is exactly what Florida and America need. Secure borders equal secure liberty.

What should U.S. policy be regarding major international challenges, including Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Cuba and Venezuela, and what role should Congress play in decisions involving military action and foreign spending?

U.S. policy must be America First: peace through strength, backed by sustained political will to outlast and outwit our enemies. That means strategic dominance on the global stage — not blank-check foreign aid. President Trump is right to leverage our superior military to crush terrorism and incentivize rational behavior in our interest from sovereign nations. Congress must honor the People’s will by supporting our elected Commander-in-Chief while exercising strict oversight on military action and foreign spending.

What are your positions on the major cultural and governance issues facing the country today, including abortion, gun rights, education, LGBTQ protections, artificial intelligence, social media regulation, term limits and government accountability?

We must protect life at all stages, full stop. “Shall not be infringed” means exactly that. Parents, not government, control education through maximum school choice. Biological reality is not bigotry — I reject gender ideology and the mutilation of minors. The Founders designed elections as term limits; strict congressional accountability and impeachment will end career corruption. Defend free speech, states’ rights and innovation regarding technology. America must return to Judeo-Christian values, constitutional governance and common sense.

Strand weighs in on elections and Donald Trump

What is your stance on the VOTE Act, election security and voter rights?

The VOTE Act is a weak Democrat procedural bill that dodges real election integrity. I support mandatory voter ID, proof of citizenship, paper ballots with same-day counting, voter roll cleanup and full transparency. Mail-in ballots must be minimal and strictly safeguarded. Voter rights are sacred — democracy dies without honest elections. I will fight to pass the SAVE America Act, abolish ballot harvesting and restore full public confidence.

What specific policies or actions of President Donald Trump do you most support? Which would you seek to advance or expand in Congress, and why?

I strongly support President Trump’s America First agenda: securing the border, unleashing American energy, cutting taxes and regulations and restoring peace through strength. In Congress, I will advance and expand the 20/20 Sovereignty Act for mass deportations, the Paycheck Freedom Act to eliminate the income tax and IRS and aggressive spending cuts. These policies put American citizens first, restore economic liberty and reject the failed uniparty status quo. Trump’s courage proves bold leadership works.
