To the Editor,
After attending recent Town Council meetings, I realized that what many longtime residents are feeling is not simply concern about growth or change.
It is grief.
Palm Beach was my first home. It is where I got married, where my children were born, and where I built a life I loved. It was a place where everything felt connected — where you knew your neighbors, where children grew up together, and where there was a shared understanding of what it meant to belong to this community.
What made Palm Beach special was never just the ocean, the architecture, or the natural beauty. It was the character of the place.
It was the courtesy. The manners. The quiet respect people had for one another. It was neighbors helping neighbors, police officers who knew the families they served, and a community where people looked out for each other.
That sense of connection is changing.
As more homes become owned by LLCs and more residents become temporary, the feeling of neighborhood becomes harder to maintain. The island risks becoming a place where people pass through rather than a place where people belong.
This is not only a Palm Beach issue. West Palm Beach and surrounding communities are experiencing enormous transformation as well. But Palm Beach faces a unique challenge because we are a small barrier island and a residential community. We cannot expand outward. We have nowhere else to go.
We are experiencing a level of development, traffic, construction and outside pressure that requires stronger leadership and better long-term planning.
Growth is inevitable. But unmanaged growth changes the very thing that made a place valuable. We need leadership that understands how to balance progress with preservation. We need thoughtful rules that protect the character of a residential community — rules regarding construction impacts, traffic, public access, commercial activity and the increasing pressure from outside interests.
We should be asking difficult questions: How much can this island realistically absorb? How do we protect our neighborhoods, our environment and our quality of life? How do we make sure residents are not overwhelmed in their own community?
Palm Beach has always been special because it was cared for. Generations before us understood that they were stewards of something rare.
That responsibility belongs to us now.
This is not nostalgia. It is love for a place that shaped generations of families.
Palm Beach is not important because of how much we can build here. It is important because of what cannot be replaced once it is gone: its character, its community and its soul. We need leadership that recognizes what is at stake before it is too late.
