MIAMI GARDENS — The 2026 season is, by all accounts, a “prove-it” year for Josh Uche.
The Dolphins acquired the veteran front-seven defender to help bolster a squad that just lost Bradley Chubb, Quinton Bell, and Benito Jones, among others. To say Uche needs Miami as much as Miami needs Uche would be a fair statement, so long as it’s a personnel marriage that works.
“He is at the point of his career where it’s a prove-it year,” Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley said. “It’s a prove-it year for himself. It’s a chance for him to say, ‘I can still do this.’ There’s a lot that goes into that. And I’ve noticed how hard he’s been working. He’s a very mature person. He’s very smart. He’s been here working throughout the summer. And we need to get everything out of him as coaches.”

No player wants to be known as a one-hit wonder, yet Uche has been unable to replicate the 11.5 sack-level production he gifted New England in the 2022 season. Uche was a 2020 second-round pick for the Patriots out of Michigan.
Injuries and declining production and snap counts have placed the 27-year-old defender on the National Football League carousel in recent seasons. Outside of the 2022 breakout season, Uche has accounted for just 10 sacks across five years with three teams.
“Watching him over the years, he’s had some really good seasons,” Hafley said. “He’s had production. He’s had sacks, even going back and watching him last year in Philly when he was playing. He’s a guy that’s tasted success in this league. And I think he’s probably been humbled and motivated by last year, being inactive for a bunch.”

For the Columbus High School graduate, perhaps a return home to sunny Miami is what the doctor ordered.
“This weather is what I grew up playing football in,” Uche said. “I’m used to the palm trees, blue skies and all that — except hurricanes. But no, it’s amazing to be home. I’ve got my family near me and I’m excited.”
Uche spoke about adding more “violence to his attack,” but he also took a moment on Thursday to address 2022, as well as lending his experience to a younger defense.
“We’re a young team and obviously there’s a role to be filled of coaching up the guys,” Uche said. “Just some mental stuff, like some things I’ve been through: How can I help them out on and off the field?”
In light of that, Uche doesn’t have any statistical objectives this year, focusing instead on the goal of “being the best player” he can be.
Maybe that means he starts. Maybe it doesn’t.
“I know I’m capable,” he said. “I know I have the skill.”
In trying to reach that point, he feels he’s in the right place — playing in a professional stadium less than an hour’s drive from where he played high school ball.
“Obviously, in 2022, I was in a pass-rush role and I maximized,” he said. “I’m just doing everything I can in my power to be efficient and get to the quarterback and finish. And whatever role I was in back then, I maximized it and it’s kind of been a theme throughout my career. Coming here, I’m just wanting an opportunity. I’m going to seize it. I’m going to maximize.”
