Despite shooting 25% from three, Florida State men’s basketball beat Cal State Bakersfield 89-59 on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
A game removed from Lajae Jones tying a program record for three’s made in a game with 10, and the Seminoles (5-1) connecting on 17 three’s overall, on Tuesday, the first three of the game came from a fan in a shooting contest during a timeout, though it took him five shots.
Both teams went a combined 0-20 from deep in the opening half of play, and CSU finished the game with one made three on 10 attempts.
The Seminoles shot 36.4% from the field in the first half before improving to 53.1% in the second half, and shooting 47.1% from three in the second half.
Chauncey Wiggins hit the first three-pointer of the game with the Seminoles’ first shot of the second half, and he scored a team-high 17 points to pair with six rebounds and a steal.
Martin Somerville went 4-of-8 from deep to score 14 points alongside three rebounds, an assist and two steals. Alex Steen added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Robert McCray V scored in double figures for the fifth time this season with 14 points, and he added four assists.
FSU forced 28 turnovers and scored 40 points off them. Points in transition where an area in the first half that allowed the Seminoles to build a 35-24 advantage at halftime despite the shooting struggles from deep, as 16 points were scored off 13 turnovers.
Despite an off shooting night, Kobe MaGee recorded five steals for the Seminoles.
