The family of Perez Hilton is speaking out after the media personality was hospitalized after police were called to his Florida home over reports of self-harm.
A disturbing but unverified video circulating online earlier this week appeared to show Hilton, 48, nude and seemingly covered in blood while exhibiting signs of distress and holding a sharp item, according to USA TODAY. The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed to USA TODAY that it had received “multiple calls regarding an individual who was livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media” on Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Hilton, born Mario Lavandeira Jr., is a native Floridian who rose to fame in the 2000s for his celebrity gossip blog and his outspoken posts criticizing celebrities. He became a controversial media figure who often fought with celebrities, including Lady Gaga, Mischa Barton and Miley Cyrus.
Earlier this year in March, Hilton was hospitalized for several weeks after he developed an ulcer, perforation and sepsis and underwent laparoscopic surgery from taking medication on an empty stomach.

Hilton moved back to his hometown of Miami earlier this year. He previously lived in Las Vegas for nearly four years.
According to Realtor, he resides in the Westchester neighborhood in Miami.
He announced the move after his illness, relocating with his mother and three children, Mario Armando Lavandeira III, 13, Mia Alma, 11, and Mayte Amor, 8, all of whom he fathered through surrogacy.

Hilton detailed his decision to move back to Miami in a June 17 Instagram video, saying he was excited and that he knew it would be the right move for his family.
“I need to move to Miami for many reasons. First, this is heaven-sent. God told me to move to Miami. … The Holy Spirit made these words come out of my mouth: ‘Let’s move to Miami,'” he said.
He added that “My entire family is in Miami. I still have friends from high school. Though I have not lived there in 30 years, it has always been my home. Once we move there, any second now, it will feel like home right away.”

Hilton is currently receiving medical care in a Miami-area hospital. Perez Hilton’s family provided an update on the celebrity blogger’s condition on Wednesday, writing Hilton is “able to communicate” while he receives medical treatment for his injuries.
“This has been incredibly difficult and emotional for us, made even harder because very little information has been made available to our family,” they said. “While we continue to wait for further updates, we remain hopeful. We have also been able to confirm that Perez is able to communicate, which has given our family hope.”
The family added, “Your compassionate humanity during this heartbreaking time has meant more than words can express.”
