Looks like Buc-ee’s needs more time to iron out details for its permit-pending travel center development that’s slated to be coming to Tallahassee.
The permit discussion, ultimately an up or down approval, was set to take place at the Application Review Committee on Aug. 5. Instead, county officials said the Texas-based franchise company is expect to officially request a continuance — making this at least the third delay this year in the permit review process.
Leon County Administrator Vince Long told the Democrat a continuance of this nature is “very common on a project of this size.”
“The applicant is well into the engineering phases of the project and appears to be making steady progress,” he said, in a text to the Tallahassee Democrat.
If the project moves forward as expected it will be one of the largest commercial developments in recent years in northwest Tallahassee and a major job creator.
It’s slated to generate nearly 200 jobs with salaries ranging from $16 to $32 per hour with six salaries estimated over $100,000.
Plans call for a mega 74,000 square-foot travel center with 120 fueling stations and wrap-around parking that will accommodate traditional vehicles, buses and recreational vehicles and electric vehicles. Plans call for 807 standard parking spaces, along with 24 electric vehicle parking spaces and about a dozens spaces for buses and RVs.
Last year, the Tallahassee Democrat first broke the news that the Texas-based chain was eyeing approximately 30 acres at the southeast corner of the Park Place Planned Unit Development (PUD) and west of Capital Circle Northwest, immediately north of Interstate 10.
Despite the delay in the permit process, Leon County Commission Chairman Christian Caban said Buc-ee’s continues to work on its application and remains in communication with Leon County.
“Our staff has been engaged every step of the way and is ready to keep the process moving once the applicant submits the next materials,” he said, in a text to the Democrat. “There’s been a great deal of excitement about the possibility of Buc-ee’s coming to Leon County, and residents have raised thoughtful questions along the way. That’s exactly what the review process is designed to do; carefully consider those questions while helping projects move forward responsibly.”
