Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield is one of the most accomplished players in college football history. For a career that started at Texas Tech, where he was an undersized walk-on, and then moved on to Oklahoma and had a statue built in his honor, is no easy task.
But could his career have been even larger than life with another Heisman Trophy to his record? PFF explored the possibility when they discussed college football seasons that were worthy of a Heisman Trophy despite folks not winning them.
Within that list was Mayfield’s 2016 season with Oklahoma. That season, he went 11-2, and the Sooners finished 5th in the polls. Mayfield himself passed for a whopping 3,965 yards while completing 70.9% of his passes. He found the endzone a total of 46 times between passing and rushing, and only threw eight interceptions on 358 attempts.
While Mayfield did not win the Heisman in 2016, he would in 2017 and cement himself as one of the best college football players and stories in sports history. Fast forward to the present day, those two seasons helped him reach the mountain top of football, and he is now considered a franchise quarterback.
