Every year, the first day of school marks a rite of passage for children who walk through school doors for the first time. For others, it is another step in a continuing journey.
Palm Beach Day Academy welcomed 585 students Sept. 2 as it began its 105th year. It was a day that was full of smiles, as classmates reunited and became reacquainted with their school home.

Head of School Fanning Hearon III and Shana Dutkewych, head of the upper school at 241 Seaview Ave., greeted students in grades four through eight as they returned to campus. Teachers also gave them a warm welcome.
Palm Beach Day School’s lower-school campus at 1901 S. Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach for students ages 2 through third grade, also welcomed children back to school.
“Palm Beach Day Academy begins its 105th year in a very strong position,” Hearon said. “We are grateful for our stable enrollment, generous parent support, and our outstanding faculty and staff. In addition, we undertook a series of long-overdue renovations to both our Seaview and Flagler campuses, and our learning spaces are looking better than ever. It was a wonderful first day, and it was amazing to see so many happy students returning to their classrooms.”
Students caught up with friends and talked to teachers as they poured through the hallways and met in the auditorium for assembly.
To note the big day, parents who dropped off their children snapped photos of the students, who also posed for pictures with their classmates.
