1. SPOIL YOUR DOG DAY: Humane Society Naples invites the community to spoil a shelter dog
Patty Baker Humane Society Naples invites dog lovers to celebrate National Spoil Your Dog Day on Aug. 10 by treating an adoptable dog to a special day out.
Rescue Recess allows participants to take a shelter dog on a short adventure. These trips give dogs a much-needed break from the kennel environment.
“Spoil Your Dog Day is a wonderful reminder that every dog deserves to feel loved and celebrated, including those still waiting for their forever home,” said Becca Morris, CEO of Patty Baker.
Participants can check in at the main shelter, where staff will pair them with a companion. PBHSN provides the essentials, including a collar, leash and backpack containing water, a bowl, treats, waste bags and a list of dog-friendly locations in Naples.
Rescue Recess is available from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday (except between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.) and from 8:30 until 11 a.m., Saturday and Sunday.
After the outing, participants are encouraged to share their photos and observations with PBHSN by emailing media@pbhsnaples.org or posting on social media using #RescueRecess.

2. STAND YOUR GROUND: What does the law say?
Before 2005, Florida law operated under the traditional common law principle of the “Castle Doctrine,” which allowed people the right to use force, even deadly force, to protect themselves against an intruder in their residence or “castle.”
The 2005 Florida law, nicknamed the Stand Your Ground law, created statutory immunity from prosecution or civil suits as long as the use of deadly force was justified. Lamakers expanded the law in 2014 to allow warning shots or the display of a weapon in self-defense.
