What does Palm Springs need in its next police chief? Residents have until Friday, Aug. 14, to tell city leaders what they want in the person who will succeed the retiring chief, Andy Mills.
The survey, available at engagepalmsprings.com, is meant as a guide to help city leaders identify the qualities community members value in a police chief.
“The City of Palm Springs is committed to a thoughtful, transparent selection process that identifies the right leader to serve our residents, support our organization, and help shape the future of public safety in our community,” City Manager Scott Stiles said in a news release. “I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to share their input on the leadership qualities they would like to see in our next Chief of Police. Our community’s voice is an essential part of this process because the people of Palm Springs are at the heart of everything we do.”
Survey results will be anonymous, and the city says the entire process should take eight to 10 minutes.
The chief is appointed by the city manager, who in turn is appointed by the city council.
Mills announced in July he would retire on Sept. 5, setting up an important decision for the city. Mills was hired by Palm Springs in 2021 after serving as the Santa Cruz Police Chief for around four years.
