UCLA baseball produced a 13-5 win against Tulane on Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Stadium after losing to UC San Diego on Sunday.
The Bruins lost a back and forth game to UC San Diego, an 8-7 loss which featured inadequate pitching, but their offense left no doubt against Tulane. UCLA scored at least two runs in five different innings. The Bruins scored in seven of eight innings at bat against the Green Wave.
UCLA fell behind after Tulane scored two runs in the top of the first. Bruin junior infielder Roch Cholowsky then hit a homer in the bottom of the first, but UCLA was still entering the top of the second down by one.
That’s when the Bruins’ defense started to heat up with the first three Green Wave batters to step up, all getting out before making it on base.
UCLA scored in the bottom of the second when freshman infielder Aiden Aguayo scored on junior centerfielder Cashel Dugger’s single. Dugger and freshman infielder Dominic Cadiz then scored to help the Bruins get a 4-2 lead heading into the third.
Tulane got back on the board in the top of the third by scoring two runs and tying the game 4-4. UCLA responded in the bottom of the third with junior outfielder Will Gasparino smacking a home run to left field, which would give UCLA a 6-4 lead.
The Bruins scored two more runs in the next two innings, all while holding Tulane scoreless. The Green Wave scored their final run in the top of the seventh to make the score 10-5.
UCLA scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the eighth to create the 13-5 final score.
Cholowsky led the Bruins with four runs and three hits with Gasparino right behind him with two hits and three runs. Although junior first baseman Mulivai Levu didn’t score a run himself, he had four hits in his five times at bat.
UCLA’s next game is on Friday, Feb. 20 against TCU to start its series at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
