When the Los Angeles Rams drafted Ty Simpson at No. 13 overall in the first round, there were some questions about how involved Matthew Stafford would be in the rookie’s development. After all, the Rams essentially drafted Simpson to be Stafford’s successor, whenever he decides to hang ‘em up.
Needless to say, Stafford has been the ultimate mentor. Simpson told Taylor Lewan of “Bussin’ With The Boys” that he’s learned more in the last four months of being around Stafford than he did in four years of college.
“It’s the same thing I did in college, except it’s a different level,” Simpson said of sitting and learning. “I’ve learned more ball in the last four months of being with him than I had in four years of being in college. He’s just so, like, cerebral. Just understands and he’s so smart with everything. It’s so cool. I appreciate him so much because he’s been nothing but nice to me.”
There should’ve been no doubt that Stafford would help Simpson every step of the way, showing him the ropes of being an NFL quarterback. But it sounds like the reigning MVP is really teaching Simpson a lot in their time together, which is awesome to hear.
There’s no firm timeline for when Stafford will call it a career and retire, but hopefully Simpson will be ready to step up whenever Matthew does hang up his cleats. If Simpson develops into a quality starter, the Rams will have seamlessly handled this transition from a future Hall of Famer to a young franchise quarterback.
