Deebo Samuel returns to 49ers on one-year contract

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Deebo Samuel is returning to the San Francisco 49ers after spending one season with the Washington Commanders.

Samuel agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $7 million, according to multiple reports. The agreement was negotiated by Tory Dandy of Athletes First and gives the veteran receiver an opportunity to revive his career in the offense where he became one of the NFL’s most versatile playmakers. San Francisco selected Samuel in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft. He spent six seasons with the franchise before being traded to Washington for a fifth-round pick in March 2025.

Samuel caught 72 passes for 727 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games with the Commanders last season. He also carried the ball 17 times for 75 yards, continuing to provide the hybrid receiver-running back ability that defined his first stint with the 49ers.

His best season came in 2021, when Samuel earned first-team All-Pro honors after producing 1,405 receiving yards, 365 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns. His eight rushing touchdowns established an NFL single-season record for a wide receiver. Samuel has not replicated that production in recent years, but his familiarity with San Francisco’s offense should reduce the adjustment period. He can line up outside, in the slot or in the backfield while giving the 49ers another experienced option capable of creating yards after the catch.

The short-term contract limits San Francisco’s financial risk while providing Samuel with an opportunity to rebuild his value before potentially returning to free agency.
